Study tests effect of climate change on Wis. loons

LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) — State and federal researchers are examining whether climate change is affecting Wisconsin's loon population.

The two-year study is designed to see whether rising temperatures are making water cloudier. That would interfere with loons' ability to feed, since they need clear water to find fish.

Department of Natural Resources scientist Michael Meyer says many lakes in southern Wisconsin are murky and filled with algae. That's forcing the birds to build nests further north.

Kevin Kenow is a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey. He says loons used to nest as far south as northern Illinois and northern Iowa. He says now loons rarely come further south than Tomah or Necedah.

The DNR and USGS are testing 120 Wisconsin lakes over a 13-county area.

It's the pollution that goes in the waterways not climate change!

WHYTHINK: Spend (or print then spend) money we don't have, on a study of loons. LOONS?!? For crying out loud...

For the record, when I write my check to pay my taxes (yes, write a CHECK), every penny of my money goes straight into the defense budget to pay our brave men and women... not any of this other nonsense. ;)

oldtimer nailed it - Its a good thing cavemen were not "as smart" as Al Gore or they may never have discovered fire - or atleast Al would have made them snuff it out - ICE AGES are a cycle! Its natural to warm & cool - remember school when they actually taught you things - now they just tell you to drink your Kool-Aide - and believe this or that theory.

I never thought I'd live to see the US national government come up with a way to tax the air we breathe, but I truly believe that this "cap and trade" scheme will do just that. Since we've legally (but not logically) defined CO2 as a pollutant, then it only follows that efforts will be made (more taxes, of course) to minimize it. Which of course was the whole point all along.

russ68: Good point!! What a waste of my money! and whythink: it isn't PC to call it global warming anymore, that would be "climate change". It is called that now because Global warming is a farse and the greenies still want to waste our money, so they changed the name to make us think it's relevant! What a load of crap!!!

Global warming started during the ice age, formed our lakes, rivers, streams, etc if we didnt have global warming we would still be in the ice age. If we could all live long enough (500 years or so) we would see all these cycles in the earths temperature. The earth is slowly tiping on its axis, the norther hemisphere will be come the souther hemisphere and vice versa,

I don't think that loons are a major cause of global warming. They sure do sound creepy at night, though.

The only loons regarding climate change are the ones that ALWAYs show up on the coldest days in Jan. and Feb. in Janesville, WI and say,
.
"see, it is -10 in Janesville so there is NO Global Warming."
.
RUSS68
How else, besides studies, are scientists to determine if global warming is happening? How elses, besides studies, are scientists to determine the effects of global warming?(if it is happening) How else, are scientists, to determine a cause of global warming? (if it is happening)
.
In order for scientists to study global warming, won't that cost money?
