Annual deer observation underway in Wisconsin
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin wildlife officials have begun their annual summer deer observations.
Each summer for three months Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources workers along with federal agriculture and forest staff create a record of deer they see. The observations play into deer population estimates and herd health monitoring.
The DNR also plans to send questionnaires to about 5,000 rural landowners, asking for their observations of deer, coyotes, skunks, bobcats, turkeys and other animals.

"their annual summer deer observations."
...
When did they start this? For years they've been telling us that the only way the can estimate the heard is by using the harvest numbers.

That is one more reason I stopped deer hunting religiously for the past few years from going deer hunting over 20 years or so in a row. The license fees keep going up and the deer herd keep going down in numbers. If the DNR and state govt. complain there are too many deer, why not lower the license fees to 10 bucks with free 2nd and 3rd permits to get rid of the 'so called' deer herd. I use to see deer in groups of 20 or more, now it is 2-4 at most. Common sense!

I hope they count the wolves in northern Wisconsin. There are more of them than there are deer. Another DNR mistake that the hunters have to pay for. I wonder if they still count the deer turds and then estimate. They have proven over the past decade they cannot even begin to "count" the deer. They should listen to the hunters who tell them there are no deer left. But they won't they have to sell more lisc.

Hurry buy your license now!! I'm thinking they are going to over count the deer again this year just to push up the sales of licenses. How lucky do you hunters feel?? Good Luck!
