UW System regents to consider tuition, fee hikes

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The president of the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents says a proposed tuition increase of 5.5 percent is modest given the state's budget mess.

Chuck Pruitt says the increase strikes a balance between maintaining the quality of the system's 13 four-year universities and keeping them affordable for students.

The regents meet in Madison on Thursday to consider approving increases in tuition and fees as part of a proposed $2.2 billion annual operating budget.

Student Regent Aaron Wingad says he hasn't decided how to vote and students are divided over the plan.

The UW-Eau Claire student says some are willing to pay more to avoid service cuts while others worry the increase costs make higher education unaffordable.

Given the Economy a 5.5% DECREASE would be a little more modest than an INCREASE

Tuition is ALREADY un-affordable for many residents in WI. WHAT would make them think a 5.5% increase is ok?

Oh wait I know! They need the rest of us to pitch in so the illegals can get a break....what on earth was I thinking?!?!

I swear WI gets more stupid every day....They should try cutting some services (sports, adminstrative, etc). Education is about EDUCATION.

Interesting, I got an e-mail this summer stating my Student Financial Aid was being cut because of state budget problems...now a hike in tuition, brilliant!

sannio: I agree with you, but no one will fire the President since he's merely following the marching orders of the elected officials. They're the ones that keep balancing the state budget on the backs of the UW-System, and thus they're the ones that keep saying, in effect, make up the difference with tuition. The cruel fact is that the difference can no longer be made up even with tuition hikes and other cost-saving measures. Unfortunately, the students of the UW-System will be paying more for less since the annual cuts have now compromised the quality of a UW education.

5.5% increase in this horrible recession? Even proposing an increase should get the president fired. This is insane.
