JANESVILLE—The 2009 Tallman Art and Music Festival has been canceled, the Rock County Historical Society announced today in an issued press release.

The two-day event was scheduled to take place Aug 1-2 on the Lincoln-Tallman House grounds, 440 N. Jackson St.

“We don’t know if it is directly related to the current economic situation, but lack of sufficient artists participating in the festival and a downturn in community sponsorship has unfortunately forced us to cancel this year’s event,” said Duke Ellingson, board president.

“We want to ensure we host quality programs, and with the current situation, we did not feel we could do that for this year’s festival,’’ he said.

I did not mean to overstep any boundaries here.

I was also admonished for saying it was one persons responsiblility and corrected saying it takes a team... You are right, it does take a team, but every team has a leader.

The core issue here is that it is a sad day that this event needed to be canceled, but I support what the Board President states - quality programs. He is correct.

HistoryBuff, do you seriously believe that the success or failure of this festival lays on ONE persons shoulders? Guess again. It takes a team - and if you really are a 'history buff' you would know that about the RCHS. I wish The Gazette would disable this function of their site. Too many people feel free to bash an individual while hiding behind their user name.

i may have been remis in my post. judging from one of the previous posts, maybe they did have a beer and wine tent. and maybe the pressure for the extra funds caused some problems for some people. i don't blame the folks that didn't want to participate in the viewing crowd due to the drunks that resulted from such sales. it should be an example for our youth hockey league.

Yeah sannio, another well thought out post. Do you use the Gazettextra for a reference on job applications?

NeuroMed, some of the Tallman House subsidy was restored in the final budget last November, but it was still a reduced figure.

.
That does not address the capital investment that will be necessary for repairs. For that, a study is still needed, and I don't know if the RCHS has had any progress in seeking grant funding for that study.

This is disappointing...I enjoyed this event every year they have put it on. Hopefully things turn around for them. Was there any further news on all the repairs the Tallman House needs & how that's moving forward? I saw an article about it quite some time ago, but never saw any follow up.

This is a severe blow. The arts festival ran on a shoestring every year so that it could be the biggest fundraiser for the society. Scaling down the event is not necessarily possible, as if it is too small it will not attract enough visitors, and if you have too many artists lose money on their trip to Janesville (which is entirely possible), they won't return.
.
I know what a wrenching decision this must have been for Ellingson. We can only hope the society will return to form in 2010.

If it's a lack of community sponsership that's causing you to cancel, just do what Wisconsin government does and raise the prices.

BIG mistake cancelling this years annual event. You could and should have held it regardless of how many booths. If you needed support, you could and should have been more creative. We all would have understood a scaled down event. Janesville needed this more than ever this year! Did the Gazette do a story on your needing more support? Who exactly runs the event and was responsible for cancelling it?

Maybe they should put on a grass hockey game, from what I hear we are big hockey town now.

Um....maybe because the quality of the event tailed off every year?
