Attorney General warns of phishing scam
The Wisconsin Attorney General’s office is warning residents of a phishing scam that has recently been reported in the state.
A man identifying himself as “Officer Smith with the United Law Enforcement and Investigation Department,” has reportedly contacted Wisconsin residents, according to a release from the office.
The caller attempted to gain the residents’ Social Security Number and other personal information. Legitimate businesses will not ask for personal information on the phone or unsecured e-mail exchanges, according to the release.
“Never give your personal identifying information out without fully confirming the source of the call and circumstances,” Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen said in the release.

Good advice Janesvillean! These con artists pray on the elderly and those with disabilities and we as a community need to do what we can to stop them.

Unfortunately, elderly people are often victims of this type of scam, either because they are more trusting, or because of a cognitive deficit, or because they are lonely and feel as if the con artist has befriended them. I saw this with my grandfather and with my father, both of them highly educated. Make sure your own older relatives are protected e.g. by moving assets into a living trust, or by making an adult child a guardian. Even being a second notified if, say, an insurance account is being withdrawn from can help you stop a scam in the act.
