JANESVILLE—The cities of Janesville and Beloit and the county of Rock combined to pledge incentives of up to $38 million during the recent competition to build a new small car for General Motors, according to a news release issued Tuesday.

The state of Wisconsin’s contribution to the package was not detailed in the short news release from the city of Janesville, but the local pledges were said to be part of an overall offer of “approximately $200 million.”

According to the release, Rock County promised $20 million in incentives. Janesville offered $15 million plus savings of up to $1 million a year by operating the plant’s wastewater facility. Beloit offered $2 million.

The announcement was in response to news media requests for the details of the incentive package. Plants in three states competed to be the home of the assembly plant. GM gave Michigan the work.

I think that the lack of a good strip club near the facility killed the deal. ;-)

Really Joker? You keep a list? I would not want to do business with someone so petty. Or paranoid.

Moo shoo, I have brought quite a bit of business to Janesville and employed countless people over the years. Don't you tell me my business again!

I am constantly making this city better by sharing my talents and resources with the community. What have you done? Still thinking about it? Trust me, I am working my connections and will continue to share my talents and resources with Janesville. I am not one for attention and the spotlight. I prefer to work under the radar and continue to spend and reinvest in our fair city. By the way,I will add you to my list as another person jealous of my personal and professional success.

I think if the city would have included lawn care, GM would have stayed.

Great idea Joker. Perhaps you can use some of your business saavy and get your connections to come have a look at Janesville. It should be no problem for a stand-up Joker like you to entice a 1,200 job deal to Janesville, let alone Wisconsin. Keep us posted on your progress.

Here is the winning package from Michigan:

"The state came up with a $779 million, 20-year Michigan Economic Growth Authority (MEGA) tax credit package. Separately, Orion Township offered a 25-year 100% personal property tax abatement, potentially worth $100 million over 25 years, according to township supervisor Matt Gibb. Oakland County offered $136.5 million in retraining funds."

I'm not sure why people think the Gazette is wrong here. They reported the news, and didn't change any information that was in the email from the city. I'm guessing that they got the information from the city because I got the city email about 11AM and it had the same information that was reported. So far, I have over 160 emails from Janesville since a year ago last June, and each and every one of them were reported in the Gazette. That makes them consistent reporters, not slouches. I like to bang them about deleting comments though. I don't want to be shielded from anything anyone has to say no matter how rude, crude, vulgar or socially unacceptable it may be.

Ok Doyle and the GM task force, how about using the money package and find some other large employer to entice them to come to Rock County? And forgot using the GM plant for anything but scrap metal and landfill.

Why didn't Doyle's "save GM" crew come out with a statement that had the details? Are they in hiding now planning their next move to further them in politics?

Some of you are way too critical. The Gazette is damned if they do and damned if they don't. They report on GM and they are "milking the GM train". They don't report on GM and they are slacking in doing their job. Yet the complainers keep coming back here to complain.......too funny:) With the price tag on what this production line would have cost, I'm so glad that it fell apart. I have no doubt that this small car will be a miserable failure, so GM's lingering presence needs to be shed sooner than later. I wonder why Beloit would step up with a $2 million pledge. They are doing very well at attracting industry to their town and I can't see the benefit of injecting millions into a company which primarily benefits Janesville.

$200 million dollars that can now be spent elsewhere? What, do you think that there is a big bag of money sitting in the Governor's office? How absurd! Certainly not THAT bag over there. No, I said NOT that bag! How should I know? It's probably just some old papers or something. The main point here is that there is not a big bag of money in the Governor's office...that was meant for GM... over there...

Thanks Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel for requesting the information. I'm curious though, did the Gazette ever send a FOIA (Freendom of Information Act) request letter to the state? Being a former journalist, I thought this would have been submitted right away. I used to use this every now and then to request information from school officials who refused to provide public right information.

$200 million dollars that can now be spent elsewhere. So, why all the furloughs and budget cuts?

The Gazette got an email from the City of Janesville this morning about this. That's where the information came from. I've been waiting for the Gazette to post it so I can say:
$166,000 tax dollars per worker to retain them for ten years???
Yikes!

The Janesville budget should like the bribe-expense savings of $15 million plus $1 million per year.

Uh, it says they released this in response to news media requests. I'm not sure what your point is, exactly. Was Frank Schultz supposed to put on face paint and a miner's hat so he could break into the Municipal Building and rifle files?

If the Gazette had any reporters, they would have gotten this information long before now. they didnt even know Doyle was cheating on his travel expenses (not supply receipts) until someone in Milw told us.
