FEMA grant will allow city to purchase, remove homes from floodplain
The city of Janesville received more than $900,000 through the Federal Emergency Management Agency Monday for the purchase and removal of nine structures on the floodplain.
The homes were heavily damaged by the 2008 flooding.
“The acquisition will help prevent future structural losses, emergency repair costs and the financial obligations of federal, state and local governments,” said Janet M. Odeshoo, acting regional administrator for FEMA, in a press release.
The funds were acquired through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, which is meant to implement long-term solutions.
FEMA will provide 75 percent of the costs for the project and the state and city are responsible for providing the rest. The city received a grant from the state Department of Commerce to cover its portion.
