MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Dane County deputy was injured when his squad was struck by a suspected drunken driver.

Sheriff's officials say the deputy was traveling with the department's dog in the Town of Pleasant Springs about 6 p.m. Tuesday when a 43-year-old Oregon woman crossed the centerline and struck the squad car.

The deputy was treated at the hospital and released. Stoughton police arrested the woman. The dog wasn't injured.

The squad was totaled.

Concerned: obviously, based on your post, the Gazette should envoke some sort of posting while drunk rule. Good grief, Charlie Brown!!

Enbibing alcohol is not dangerous. Enbibing alcohol, to the point of drunkeness, is dangerous. And...driving a 2000 pound piece of machinery is ALWAYS a dangerous act!!

ConcernedCitizen: When is driving drunk NOT a dangerous action?!

DUI laws do need to be reformed, but not made stronger, they need to be abolished altogether. There are already laws against all of the bad behavior that people exhibit while driving drunk, so why do we need an extra layer of punishment on top of the laws already in place? Killing and hurting people while driving drunk is bad. Driving drunk in the absence of dangerous actions is not. But I guess it is important for our society to always have some kind of witchhunt in progress, and this is one that always seems to excite people.

freddog: i'm sure if it was you hit by a drunk driver or heaven forbid a family member badly hurt you'd be the first to cry a different story, THEY DON'T NEED TO BE ON THE STREETS DRIVING DRUNK.

Dr. Phil? That self-absorbed, opinionated SOB knows everything, just ask him. His wife must be a heavy drinker. Is he still wasting an hour of electricity every afternoon on television? Just think of how much we could save if we shut the TV off for that hour.

Not a bright idea Rick......a majority of people are upside down on their vehicles--so it would be a blessing to have them repossessed. Sure, the offender would still owe the bank, but anyone with half a brain would just file for bankruptcy at that point and not only clear the vehicle debt, but all of their other credit card debt as well.......I own all of my cars outright, so if a law like this was put into effect I would just buy a $200 beater to drink and drive in:)

i got a idea, once a week hold trials in brewers stadium, the public invited, $200 a ticket, bring out the accused, read the charges, the crowd signals, thumbs up, he gets to go free, thumbs down, beheading, immidiate and swift, you'd sell out every week, the state has money for other things, and u get to be part of justice..the courts will have more time for other things..

Thank goodness the deputy and dog are ok. Bad enough to drive drunk...but to hit someone, anyone, and especially a deputy...talk about smart.

i don't drink at all, u people don't realize what you're saying, any law applies to everyone equally, you'll sing a different tune when you get in trouble, u want a police state and are heading there fast, you whine about taxes then whine for more people to be locked up and taken care of by the state, death penalties, courts would be jammed with the cases, appeals, or are you advocating vigilante justice, lets just take them out and shoot them, no trials, you'd gladly sacrifice a few innocents that get caught up in it I guess, just so you get your pound of flesh, you want blood, you don't want to help make things better, you're fools...

After a first offense, seize their vehicles with NO RETURN. EVER. Sell them off (it doesn't even matter if it wasn't their car, if you lend your car to someone who drinks and drives, you're just as much an idiot as the driver if it's the driver's 2nd offense)..use the money towards restitution for those who get hurt, killed or lose property by more morons who don't have insurance.

beeferer, I don't know where you get your information, but it is WAY out of date. El Salvador effectively abolished the death penalty in 1983, and Bulgaria in 1998. In both cases the penalty had not even been used in roughly a decade.

freddog: You also bring up prevention, WAKEUP how many times have you read about a drunk driver in a crash and it's their 4th, 5th, 6th, time? too offten. Sending them to classes isn't going to help, listening to them say "i'll never do it again" isn't going to work either, these people are killers and should be treated as such, nothing more.

freddog: I'll live where I want to live, my choice not yours, i'm going to guess you like to drink and drive from the anger i feel coming from your comment. I said the ones who kill when driving drunk should get the same out come, if they are dumb enough to get behind the wheel when drunk when they do have other choices to get home I don't want them on the same street my kid either walks or rides his bike. My son's life is much more worth some dumb a@@ who has to go out and get drunk and then behind the wheel. You should think aout what your saying, i'd rather pay to lock them up then have them driving drunk but still ... if they kill, well an eye for an eye ... nough said.

and just where do you get the room for all these pople you want locked up, you got any idea how much it would cost to take care of them, how many cells you need, the answer isn't in punishment, its in prevention, little johnny needs to be taken to the woodshed and taught there are consequnces for your actions, its the bleeding hearts that yell child abuse if u slap your kids bottom that made this mess, ,,,

the law is in essence, reactive, not proactive. because of this, we will ALWAYS have drunk drivers killing people. there is no defenitive solution that will work all the time regardless of the laws or education policies adopted by our society. WE are a society of legal drugs that under certain circumstances alter behavior, decision making and coordination. tougher laws put the offender behind bars (in jail) for longer periods of time. it is the insanity of addiction that boggles the mind and the system.

I forgot one group that I also want shot immediately. Illegals that are caught behind the wheel should also be put down. My neighbor(sweetest, older lady) recently had one blow right through a stop sign and total out her car. The guy had no license, no insurance and just stood there saying "no ingleas". Thankfully she wasn't hurt, but just the fact that she was put in a position where she could have been, this guy obviously deserves the firing squad!!!!!

The point here should be that the state is too lenient on drunk drivers. Why does it seem to be that whenever you read about an accident involving a drunk driver, it is ALMOST NEVER THEIR 1ST OFFENSE? Make the first offense a hefty fine and after that, start putting them in the jails, prisons, monitoring bracelet, and stop just slapping their hands, because their irresponsibility is costing innocent people their lives. Maybe they should back off the smokers for a bit and hit a heavy tax on alcohol, so they get people to back off the booze like they got people to lay off the smokes

donkeykong: I have to say I could go along with the execution thing, I know it will never happen but just look back. How many kids have been killed just so some moron could go out and have a few beer? How many people have been killed while walking together enjoying a walk? The list could go on and on all just so some drunks can have thier jollys ... no there is no defence for these KILLERS and I think they should be killed if they take a life, they know what could happen if they start drinking outside of thier house but they don't care. They do know that after they kill someone they would rather take off rather than see is they left anyone alive after a crash .... nope, kill the drunks they have it coming.

I agree beeferer....We should also shoot all of the 16 and 17 year olds that spend too much time concentrating on talking and texting while driving --I would love to see those accident statistics. Maybe the firing squad would curb this reckless behavior. While were at it, let's shoot those kids on those crotch rockets too. I had a pack of them fly by me last week on 51--they were easily doing over 100mph....No regard for public safety--firing squad for them too!

In some countries, drinking and driving is punishable by death. A first time offense in El Salvador leads to execution by firing squad, while a second offense in Bulgaria also leads to execution. Why not here??? I have lost too many friends who were killed by drunken drivers.
