Briggs & Stratton to close Jefferson plant
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Briggs & Stratton said today it will close its Jefferson plant in fiscal 2010.
The facility manufactures generators and pressure washers.
The Milwaukee engine maker says production in Jefferson will be consolidated into its existing engine and lawn and garden plants.
Briggs & Stratton estimates about $11 million in pre-tax savings from the consolidation of operations in fiscal 2011.

You right winged nut jobs think Doyle is the reason B & S is leaving? I suppose he was the reason it was 60 degrees today and why the Brewers lost 1-0 to the Mets? Good grief.

Thanks a lot Gov. Doyle, losing more jobs here in Wisconsin. GM, Brigs, Paper Mills, what company is next? I agree with the people that we should recall Gov. Doyle.

Gee, I didn't know both Doyle and Obama worked at Briggs and Stratton! What logic do you use to blame the the state's Governor and our country's President for a company choosing to close a plant that provides them with approximately "$11 million in pre-tax savings from the consolidation of operations in fiscal 2011." Lets face it, the days of wasteful consumer spending are over. Businesses are finding it necessary to cut back in order to survive and better serve a less demanding consumer. Instead of the US using consumer trade to raise the standard of living around the world, just the opposite has happened. Our trade policies have led to changes in our standard of living that better reflect how the rest of the world lives, on less. This started long before Doyle and Obama came on the scene. Welcome to the world WalMart helped create, where you can buy more for less!!

Wisconsin would still be some distance from their key markets in hurricane zones. Unless Doyle, in addition to bringing about the global recession, is also able to control the weather.

I found this out around 8 this morning...my boyfriend works there. He was unemployed for about 5 months and just got a job there about a month ago...only to now find out that he only has a job until December...if they keep him until then...

It appears they are closing the plant in Watertown too. Here is a much better article - including the number of jobs lost.

bennetonf1...You're absolutely right. By offering more concessions to big business, the tax burden shifts to us. I know Wisconsin needs to find more ways to attract business, and I'm not opposed to offering tax incentives to big business, but I doubt it would've helped in this instance. As we've seen with GM, offering huge tax breaks doesn't always keep a company here. And I can guarantee that offer given to GM would've been given regardless the Governor's political party. GM was one of the state's largest employers when you factor in all the smaller manufacturers who supplied them. It would've been idiotic to not offer them an incentive to keep the plant open. Unfortunately, it didn't help in the end. I doubt it would've helped with the Briggs & Stratton plant in Jefferson either.

I'm not up on all the latest budget stuff but, if he "tossed" concessions to B & S would that not increase the tax burden thus giving you something else to blame him for?

Doyle drops the ball again! Had he tossed concessions to Briggs like he did with GM maybe they would be announcing the consolidation of other plants to Wisconsin. Can we give Obama concessions to encourage him to take Doyle for an appointment?
