We're No. 2! Wisconsin moves up in vegetable rankings
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Wisconsin has moved into the No. 2 spot in terms of U.S. vegetable production, despite drops in growth of some top crops.
California is the nation’s No. 1 vegetable producing state, accounting for 69 percent of all vegetables grown.
The National Agricultural Statistics Service says Wisconsin is the leader in growing snap peas for processing, producing 40 percent of the nation’s crop with nearly 327,000 tons in 2008. It moved into second place in production of sweet corn for processing, with nearly 652,000 tons last year.
Green pea and cucumber production dropped, putting Wisconsin at third and fourth place, respectively, for those processed vegetables.
Wisconsin’s main fresh market vegetables are cabbage, sweet corn and onions. Production of all three of those dropped last year.

I know that last year the farmers were concerned about losing their crops because of the extensive rain and flooding... the land that they had sowed was oversaturated, and in some senses, washed out... I'm just glad that we've moved up in the overall ranks... I guess this gives the farmers all the more reason to not sell their land for commercial/residential development...

The third paragraph should read "snap beans" not "snap peas" according to the AG dept: http://www.wisconsinagconnection.com/sto...

Most of the good farm land where the vegetables are grown wasn't flooded.

it's amazing that we did as well as we did last year given the excessive flooding... that may be why the numbers dropped in cabbage, sweet corn, & onions... maybe they'll do a recount this year, if there isn't another major flood... :)
