Feds say no to Beloit casino; fight not over, tribes say
BELOIT -- The federal government on Tuesday denied a proposal to allow a casino complex in Beloit. The decision comes one week before a new administration takes over the federal bureaucracy.
Tribal spokesman Joe Hunt said the tribes still have hope. He cited an ongoing court case and the possibility that Barack Obama's administration would see things differently.
Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., and state Sen. Judy Robson, D-Beloit, both issued statements saying they were disappointed and expressing hope that a new administration would reverse the decision.
Baldwin took the Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne to task, saying in her statement that "he has made a decision based not on law, but on his own personal bias."

Casinos are just another form of taxation. The tribe and the Gov will be laughing all the way to the bank.

Piznat, What about making people responsible for their choices to spend whatever money they have left at a casino? Alcoa is closing, Cub Foods just announced they are closing and GM is done. Why not focus on having jobs available for people in our community and all the positive aspects this casino would bring to our community instead of avoiding it so people don't make poor choices? Whether a casino is here or not people will find ways to spend their money. They can gamble money away at a friends house or buy lottery tickets like you think is another waste. Let's focus on bringing more jobs in our area and bringing money in with tourism and everything else positive this can bring to our area!

So much for the concept of a government OF THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE who voted for this in the first place. Funny Mr dick Kempthorne waits until a week before his sorry butt is out of office to deny it since its been in DC for years now.

Wow what a slippery slope. People talk about the negatives of a casino, and if one comes in then this probably WILL happen. People act like the casino is the only thing that would be coming in. Let's look at the package and the benefits it would bring. Along with the casino comes the convention center, strip mall, hotels and water park. Remember the new Best Western on 75...... it came in because of the anticipation of the whole complex coming. OK so with the complex comes JOBS!!!! OMG we need those here... I heard some rumblings last night about a few more businesses potentially going by the wayside. What about the revenue generated by the strip mall, water park and convention center?? To my understanding, the casino is the only part of the complex that will be tribal owned, the rest would pay regular taxes like regular businesses. So with this complex comes business, then cash, and eventually we could see more businesses coming in here. This is an opportunity to pick this area up out of a hole.
Let's focus on the whole package and not just the slot machines and hold 'em tables...... I don't see anyone else rushing in here to save the day.

Good...the casino would suck any money that the folks have left. People hoping for a jackpot will just waste the money, just like the lottery. It is a poor mans tax and the casino will also be. The reward of the casino does not even come close to the potential damage it could do to the local communities.

This is disappointing, especially in light of the fact that the decision has been awaited for years and is announced one week before a new administration takes office. However, I have a feeling that the denial will be overturned.
