Madison appliance maker to cut up to 350 jobs
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Sub-Zero Freezer/Wolf Appliance says it will lay off up to 350 workers on or after May 1 due to slow sales.
The company builds high-end refrigerators, freezers and cooking appliances. Its Thursday announcement follows the layoff of 79 workers in January at the Wolf Appliance division in Madison. It also has operations in Fitchburg and Phoenix.
Vice president of human resources Chuck Verri says the recession and a slowdown in home construction and remodeling are to blame. He says much of the company's business comes from kitchen remodeling.
Madison Local 565 of the Sheet Metal Workers Union represents many of the company's workers. Business agent Dave Goodspeed says the news was a blow because Sub-Zero/Wolf provides good-paying jobs.

Hey Chrmkr...come this summer it's possible many of the newspapers won't be up and running or reporting anything...look at Denver's paper or Seattle or Madison...this isn't doom and gloomers v. ostrich-heads...the glass isn't half full or half empty, it's full of piss... every bank isn't tittering on the brink b/c of some mass hysteria...but let's not fret...let's have a end-of-the-world tail gate party down at the GM parking lot!

carlitosway - Actually, due to the budget constraints brought on by the current economic situation, the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off.

I work here and these are really difficult times in this country, not just at Sub Zero or Wolf but everywhere. The media doesn't help with all the gloom, doom and speculation. I am glad they report it but it also sends some people running and packing away their money. I guess the media is damned if they do and damned if they don't. I just hope that we don't have to lose too many more people because of this recession. Good luck to all of those people who lose their job.

It's likely that by the time summer gets here, the newspapers will be able to save space by only reporting the companies that have not closed or had mass layoffs.

...do you really think that the economy wasn't in the tank before?
Whether it was Obama or McCain, the results were going to be the same.
Hell, they'd have been the same even if your buddy Dubya had been allowed to annoint himself King.

Given the sector they're associated with (high-end construction) it's surprising this hasn't happened earlier. You wonder if firms like this will be able to survive a 24-36 month recession.
