Federal spending bill would expand Ice Age trail
MILWAUKEE (AP) — A spending bill working its way through Congress includes $1 million to expand the Ice Age Park and Trail in Wisconsin.
The House of Representatives approved the 2009 Omnibus Appropriations bill this week, and the Senate is to consider it next week.
Trailway director Andrew Hanson says the bill provides $1 million to buy land in Dane, Waukesha and Columbia counties, where the trail now passes over paved roads. It also includes about $125,000 to build hiking trails on the new land.
Hanson says the federal money will help generate more private donations and allocations from state and county governments.
He says it's another step toward completing the 1,200-mile off-road path marking the glaciers' farthest point south in the last ice age.

I am thrilled at the prospect of $1 million coming in to the state of Wisconsin. Tourism is a major revenue generator for our state. The opportunity to continue to develope those resources that draw people here and make this a place we love to live is an investment that generations to come will benefit from.

"If the government cuts back spending, this recession will last longer."

The CBO report prior to the massive stimulus bill said the recession would be over within 18 months with NO action of the gov. So far the only action the spending more money decision has done is ruin the market even more.

Took me two minutes to send off an E-mail to Senator Feingold about this.
Use the $million to put up a toll booth at the Illinois state line. Then use the first $million made from the first toll booth to put another toll booth up near Minneapolis.

Pork is right. If we're going to spend pork let's invade another mideast country that poses us no harm! How about Lebanon? Screw bike trails lets see some jet trails during another shock and awe. Bike trails only benefit a few. Lets send more troops to another dangerous area. That way almost everybody who knows a soldier gets involved. Jobs for the military not for bike trails I say.

The government needs to spend our tax money in ways that would benefit evryone first, these kind of programs only impact the few locals whos property gets purchased and those who occasionaly hike or ride the trail, I don't forsee a large boost to the local economy that would even come close to the dollars spent on this, one million plus would sure go a long ways elsewhere, like say education, health care, job creation, Send a meessage to our elected officals and tell them this is not the type of stimulas our country needs right now.

Will this allow the trail to be completed in the last section south of Fort Atkinson and north of Milton, or east of Milton to the Walworth County line? From the looks of the Rock County Parks fund, the ATC money will be squandered on already established, and sparsely used parks in remote areas of the county. Until they have the male encounter experiences taken care of in those parks, no family is going to want to subject their kids to that behavior. Why waste the money on that? We know people use the trails. We can see how much use they have every day on the way to work. It sure would be nice to bike to work sometime. If a few of us started biking on Highway 26 I bet this would receive more attention!

Isn't this the "CHANGE" you liberals all voted for? You have obviously forgotten the story of the Scorpion and the Frog. Liberals - "Democrats" tax, tax, tax, and spend, spend and oh yes spend! That is who they are and what they do, plus telling you "X" and doing "Y".

send a note to Sen.Feingold with your opinion, this can't be a done deal yet. I wonder if he is aware of the spending. I can't believe he would't care.

Our elected officials just can't control themselves. Spend, spend, spend. Doesn't matter that there isn't any money. We'll just tax the "rich" some more to pay for it!
While expanding the Ice Age Trail is a nice idea, we can't afford it right now. Why not wait until the economy is a little better and the tax revenue is a little higher before spending any non-critical dollars? Or better yet, have improvements entirely privately funded and save our tax dollars all together!

I guess this makes sense, we will need someplace for all the unemployed to walk and see how our tax dollars have been spent to stimulate the economy
