Wis. offers tax credits for dairy, meat processors
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Wisconsin is looking to expand its dairy and meat processing industries with two new tax credit programs included in the state budget bill approved last week.
One program gives tax credits to dairy cooperatives that upgrade their plants to increase production or efficiency. The other gives tax credits to meat processors who improve their operations.
Gary Radloff is director of policy and communications for the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. He says the programs build on the state's success with a tax credit introduced in 2007 for private, noncooperative cheese plants.
Radloff says that tax credit program generated $42 million in investments and nearly 70 jobs at cheese plants in its first year. It cost the state $600,000 that year.
