MILWAUKEE (AP) — The number of homes sold in Wisconsin dropped sharply last year, but sale prices held up better than the national average.

The Wisconsin Realtors Association says home prices declined 9.5 percent nationally. In Wisconsin, prices dropped 3.7 percent in 2008.

But, the volume of homes sales in Wisconsin dropped about 19 percent last year, compared to a nationwide decline of about 13 percent.

Association president William Malkasian says prices in Wisconsin outperformed those elsewhere in the Midwest region. The average sale price of a home in Wisconsin last year was $158,000, compared with $164,000 in 2007.

Another more accurate headline would be "Wisconsinites are having a very hard time selling their homes"

Another nothing article. As stated earlier we never saw the big run up in home prices other regions did. As a result, we're not seeing as steep of declines.

DrTalk, "higher" is wrong in absolute terms -- Wisconsin has below-average home prices. The percentage drop compares more accurately with areas that have experienced a steep run-up in prices, but then saw housing prices collapse beginning as much as a year before Wisconsin.
.
We never saw the same level of increases, but we are experiencing the housing "crash" later than other parts of the country, largely because of the credit markets.

How about this headline?:
"Last one to leave Wisconsin, please turn off the lights."

I think a more accurate headline would read "Wisconsinites adamant about selling their homes"

If the sale prices only dropped 3.7% in Wisconsin compared to the rest of the country, that sounds to me like you could get a better deal on house outside of Wisconsin. Why else would home sales drop 19% in Wisconsin compared to 13% in the rest of the country?
