PADDOCK LAKE—Authorities say the rented home in Paddock Lake where a woman died in a fire had a clothes dryer vent pipe that was stuffed with lint and no working smoke detectors.

Town of Salem Fire Chief Mike Slover the fire that was discovered about 12:30 a.m. Friday apparently started in the lint vent, spread into the adjacent wall and melted a nearby water softener. That caused water to spray out and suppress the fire, but it also created a smoldering blaze that filled the small home with smoke.

Firefighters found the victim, 48-year-old Cynthia Nagode, unconscious on the kitchen floor near the entry to the utility room. Her dog was also found in the house and was revived by firefighters.
