Fundraising during budget banned in Wis. Assembly
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Lawmakers will not be able to raise funds during debate of the state budget in the Wisconsin Assembly.
A bipartisan committee voted unanimously Wednesday to pass a rule halting campaign fundraising from the moment the governor introduces his budget until it passes the Assembly.
Three Republicans on the eight-member Assembly Organization Committee argued that it would be better to pass a law, but they supported the idea.
Assembly Speaker Mike Sheridan, D-Janesville, agreed to debate a bill proposed by Republican Rep. Mark Gottlieb of Port Washington that would put the ban in law.
A lawmaker who breaks the rule could be subject to internal penalties such as removal from a committee or censure. There are no criminal or civil penalties.

Well hallelujah, finally an idea both sides of our legislature could agree to. There may be hope yet.
