Dairy researchers want a barn upgrade

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are hoping for a slice of federal stimulus money to upgrade the dairy barn.

The building that houses the university's research cows was built in the 1950s. The stalls were designed for smaller cows. Improved genetics have made research cows beefier, so it's a tight fit.

The university is asking for $2.5 million to upgrade the facility.

Dairy research director Rick Grummer says Madison is a premier university for research and instruction, but whether that means federal money will be available is unknown.

Where have you people been? Wisconsin has been in a fight to the finish with California for a number of years now to prove which state has the "happiest" cows.

There's a lot riding on the results in the form of state exports and other monetary rewards.

This sounds like a small price to pay on the road to bovine happiness...:)

Yes, upgrades to the barn are needed.... They were needed 10 years ago when I worked there. But 2.5 mil? And to come out of the stimulus? How is that stimulating the economy or helping us taxpayers?

This new barn is needed, but the stimulus package is not.

Have any of you commenting ever been in the barns at the UW? Having gone there to school and growing up on a dairy farm, this is sorely needed. What are the farmers getting from any politicians today? Where's their stimulus check? Many buildings I had class in are gone, or remodeled. Nothing has been done to the barns. This college was started as an agricultural college, mind you.

garyprimer, the Obama plan "will invest in America today by creating jobs, but it will pave the way for sustained economic growth through long-term investments", according to the White House spokesman, yesterday. This is in line with what Obama himself has been saying since last fall.

It's too bad that this project is being held up as the whipping boy for waste in the stimulus package. There's no shortage of doozies in the bill that will never create a job or benefit a working person...or cow.

They should change the term "Stimulus Package" to "Pennies from Heaven" because apparently there are a lot of people who think thats where it comes from!

So where is this money coming from ? The last stimulus was barrowed from china. I don't think the politicians have caught on yet,the more THEY spend, the deeper WE get. Looks like our grandchildrens kids will be paying for this one. These politicians are like kids in a candy store wanting to spend money they don't have.

My kids have gotten bigger, I would like a slice to buy bigger beds for them!!! How about if I put on some weight, can they buy new furniture for me?? The politicians in DC will keep doing thier political thing and run this country right into the ground! Politics as usual, change we can believe in!!!

The goal of the stimulus plan is not to boost long term investment, it is to create jobs through targeted spending and targeted tax cuts.

The stimulus is focused on construction projects specifically because that will boost long-term investment. This is a perfectly valid project.

Are you kidding me! The economy is in the tank and they think cows need wider stalls? Sounds to me like the UW has it's head in the clouds. Or the cowpie.
