Wisconsin man dies in snowmobile crash

AUTRAIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A Wisconsin man has died following a collision involving his snowmobile and five companions’ sleds in Alger County.

State police at Munising identify the victim of Saturday morning’s crash at 42-year-old Nicholas Waranka of Port Washington, Wis. Paul Murphy, a 44-year-old from Lake Quivira, Kan., was being treated in the intensive care unit at Marquette General Hospital.

Troopers say the six were riding together when all of their sleds struck a snow embankment and they lost control.

The four other snowmobilers, all from Wisconsin, escaped injury.

According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Waranka is the ninth victim of a fatal snowmobile accident in Michigan so far this winter.

Paul died a few weeks later from injuries sustained in this crash. He had only recently moved to Kansas from Oconomowoc. He is still deeply missed.
