White House farmer finalists announced
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Farmers from Wisconsin, Washington and California have won an online poll to choose nominees for a White House farmer.
The poll was conducted as part of a lobbying effort to have President Barack Obama hire a White House farmer and create an organic fruit and vegetable garden on five acres of the South Lawn. The position doesn’t actually exist yet.
The winners in the poll were Claire Strader of Madison, Carrie Little of Tacoma, Wash., and Margaret Lloyd of Davis, Calif.
Poll organizer Terra Brockman of Congerville, Ill., plans to forward their names to the White House. Strader and Little say in a joint statement that they are honored to be nominated for the job and hope the effort will draw attention to the importance of small-scale, organic farming.
Brodhead farmer Dela Ends was also nominated.
