Wis. AG: Content on town chair's site public
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen says the information on a local official's group Web site is public.
A reporter for the Westosha/Paddock Lake Report told Van Hollen in September that Salem town Chairwoman Linda Valentine had set up an invitation-only site called "Making Salem Better." The reporter said the site contains discussions about town business but the Report's editor was denied access.
Van Hollen issued an informal opinion saying the site apparently falls under Wisconsin's open records law. He notes Valentine communicates about matters of public interest related to her position.
He says the public should be allowed to inspect the content through a records request, but the law doesn't grant actual site access.
Valentine says she hasn't seen the opinion and declined further comment.
