Edgerton will not sell vet building
The Edgerton City Council voted unanimously to make the Edgerton Veterans Memorial Building available for lease but not purchase tonight after passionate speeches from veterans and their families.
A local businesswoman, Cathy Engler, has expressed interest in renting the building with a possible intent to buy it someday. The YMCA also has expressed interest in renting the building, City Administrator Ramona Flanigan said.
The city has lost about $12,000 a year on the building since taking over its management in 1995 despite lease agreements in some of those years, Flanigan said.

Jansevillean,
With no dis-respect, yes, your words were unclear. However, thank you for clearing it up. I can try to explain to you why it's important to keep it running.
Many Veterans don't feel right taking advantage of many benefits they are offered. This is true mostly with older veterans, but also some veterans today. In the days of the great wars, many benefits we have today were not established. In the days of Vietnam, many veterans faced a large amount of disrespect when they came home. There is also the issue of pride. It's tough to admit that you need help, when someone thinks of you as a hero. Just yesterday, I met a man who fought in the battle of the bulge (WWII). His feet froze out there. He only went to the VA hospital within the last year though, to be taken care of. Metaphorically speaking, getting rid of benefits because veterans are not using them today is essentially denying them the opportunity to in the future. That warrior from World War II definitely deserves his VA benefits though, and any others he may not be taking advantage of right now. No one is going to think he's lesser of a man. It took time though, for him to accept this. The story is typical of many veterans. This is why it is essential we keep the door open... because we need them to know we don't stop caring.

thekai, I hope you understand that my comments are not about the veterans and their service. They are asking about this expense and why this particular building are important, when the veterans barely even use it. It seems that even slightly questioning the cost of the building means that I am assumed to be questioning the service of the veterans. Why is that? Are my words that unclear?

janesvillean,
Long since has the time passed when most Americans have seen the ultimate sacrifice us Veterans are willing to pay in order to keep this country safe. Men and women are still dying today, but thank God it's not at rates similar to either of the World Wars. The fact is, though, those of us who VOLUNTEER years of our lives today, know full and well that at a moment's notice we could face danger just as grave as those who went before us and fought for the Freedom of Americans, earning the benefits we enjoy.
Trump card nothing. I've lost a really good friend and comrade in Afghanistan. I still have friends who are fighting over there today, and I pray for their safety. If all hell breaks loose, you can bet your sweet butt I'm going to do what I can to defend this country. I'll join right back up in an instant, even though right now I am honorably discharged. I already served my time. I already get the benefits. I didn't do it for the benefits though. It logically follows, I'll put my life on the line again and again, and not ask for more than what I have already EARNED.
I know it can be hard for someone to understand the full gravity of the situation today. Believe me, though, that's a good sign.

If any other organization were to demand their own building for about 36 hours of activity a year, including naming rights, they would be laughed out of the room. (By contrast, for example, the ice arena here is used almost every waking hour of the day, and some people still don't want to support it.) I guess this issue is settled now, proving veterans are appreciated even at a high ongoing taxpayer outlay, but veterans need to stop using this trump card for everything. "It's for veterans!" is not a counterargument.

It seems that at minimum, the city already absorbs $12,000 of cost each year in order to keep this building a vet's building. It seems that's a fair amount of "appreciation" in light of how few vets use that building.
In regards to yet another complaint about the Gazette's writing, maybe the headline was a bit ambigous in order to make you read the article to figure out what it's about. Use your efforts to comment on more worthwhile items. Really.

Does Edgerton even have a true American Legion/Veterans Building??
I know it has the mane on it, but is a true legion post??? Why not just give it back to the Vets and only have them pay Property tax on it.. it can't be that much..
These men and women gave so much for our freedom and safety, and not many of them have anything to show for it...
THEY SERVED OUR COUNTRY, NOW IT'S TIME WE SERVE THEM.....

It would be kind of the taxpayers to recognize the burden us Veterans have gladly accepted.
(Many do... and thank you VERY much :-D.)

I believe this building has officially entered white elephant status. It would be kind of the veterans to recognize this burden they have placed on the taxpayers.

I think DanMan is referring to the fact and implying that a commonly accepted shortened name of Richard is Dick.
I should add...
