Wis. students improve SAT scores

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin students scored slightly better on the SAT this year.

According to the College Board, which administers the test, and the state Department of Public Instruction, students who graduated this spring scored an average of 594 in critical reading, up seven points from last year; 608 in math, up four points from last year; and 582 in writing, up five points from last year. The test is scored on a scale of 200 to 800.

The national averages were 501 in reading, 515 in math and 493 in writing.

Black students scored worse than white students in Wisconsin, reflecting a national trend. Blacks scored an average of 501 in reading, compared with 604 for whites; 510 in math, compared with 612 for whites; and 494 in writing, compared with 591 for whites.
