Union leaders, Merc Marine president talk
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) — Two days after the union at Mercury Marine rejected a package of wage and benefit concessions, the company president and some union leaders met but no breakthroughs occurred.
Company spokesman Steve Fleming said President Mark Schwabero and two union leaders met for two hours Tuesday. Fleming says the company offered no changes in the proposed labor deal and the union gave no indication it would seek another vote on the concessions.
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Local 1947, said its 850 members voted overwhelmingly Sunday to reject Mercury Marine’s offer to rework a four-year labor contract. The offer remains valid until midnight Saturday.
Mercury Marine says that without the labor concessions, many of the 850 Fond du Lac jobs making engines will move to a nonunion plant in Stillwater, Okla.

DDoright--It's not a bad comparison--Taxpayers are subsidizing the difference. Domestic autos should be sold at a much higher price than they are for the respective companies to make money. The Japanese would kill them as far as market share goes if the domestic manufacturers were to increase prices to cover their expenses--enter the US taxpayer with billions of dollars to "invest" in these loser, union infested companies........

DDoright-not so, the price of non-union (foreign) cars might be the same but the value is different. Just look at the trade-in or resale value as well as over all quality of foreign vehicles. they are worth the price. Union made (domestic)isn't.

I have been saying this to my friends over the past 25 yrs that unions are killing this country. They kept asking for the sky until it caved in on them and they still can not see the hand writing on the wall. No company can afford to keep paying $30.00 wages plus another $40.00 benefits and still compete with the rest of the world. Keep in mind the average good wages in this country is between 10 and 14 dollars and that is non union places.

Bad comparison JustAskMe. "The price of union-made cars are priced beyond their VALUE." The price of non-union cars is exactly the same. Go figure.

Switching to non-union plants is a sign of the future - if America wants to be a productive leader in the world economy.
