LAND O'LAKES, Wis. (AP) — More than 1,100 acres of land in the National Highland-American Legion State Forest is being purchased with $2 million from the state's stewardship fund.

The stewardship fund is used to protect environmentally sensitive lands. The forest land being bought is along the Ontonagon River and Palmer Lake.

The land borders the Ottawa National Forest and the section of the Ontonagon River that flows through it is categorized as a trout stream.

The Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest covers more than 232,000 acres in Vilas, Oneida and Iron counties and attracts more than two million visitors a year.

Gov. Jim Doyle announced the purchase on Sunday.
