RACINE — Racine police say an officer responding to a report of unleashed dogs shot two pit bulls, killing one and wounding the other.

Sgt. Mark Van Schyndel says police received the report at about 5:45 p.m. Friday.

He says when the officer responded, two pit bulls charged him. He says the officer had to shoot them to defend himself.

Van Schyndel says one dog died and the other was hurt. Countryside Humane Society picked up both animals.

The officer wasn’t hurt.

mjb- I hope you have a dry sense of humor and were trying (in vain) to make a joke. No one in their right mind would have made such a comment and meant it. Please tell us you were kidding so we don't have to worry about you.

Oh sure mjb....."shame on the police officer". Do you realize how ridiculous that sounds? If that officer saw those pitbulls charging a loved one of yours in an aggressive manner - should he just shout to them to "sit and stay"???

Owner(s) was at fault for unleashed dogs. They could've charged at a child in a neighboring yard. Nice.

Seriously? i'm sure the officer could tell if the dog was charging in an aggressive manner or not. I'm a dog lover myself, but if two dogs, pitbulls or not, came charging at me and i was armed, i would have done the same thing. Waiting until the dogs got to him would have been too late.

cops are trained in ways to deal with things, dogs included. Im sure if he shot them he had to.

mjb: Why don't you blame the gun, that's what you would probably do if it was some kid shooting another kid. They should charge the dog owner with animal cruelty; the officer did not allow the dogs to run at large. Direct the blame towards the proper party.

did this officer acctually know that the dogs were going to to aggresive or did he just see them charging? Sometimes dogs get excited when they see people and run to get attention. Shame on the police officer for takin the life of an innocent animal and injuring another. I think they should find out what really ahppened and stick the officer with animal cruelty charges

I can't wait for the "Animal Lovers Brigade" to get all upset about this situation. I'm sure their response will be that these type of dogs are misunderstood and the officer should have stopped the dogs with a hug and a belly rub.

I'm glad the officer is okay! It's scary having any dog charge you, but one that is known to have that aggressive behavior, no matter how it's raised!
