Aunt accused of slamming niece's head into wall
SHEBOYGAN FALLS — A 44-year-old Sheboygan Falls woman is accused of slamming her niece’s head into the wall until the 17-year-old girl passed out.
Prosecutors say Verna M. Michalski asked the niece to help clean the house, and grew angry when the girl said she’d help after she returned from a job interview.
Michalski was charged Friday with felony substantial battery and misdemeanor disorderly conduct. The charges carry a maximum penalty of nearly four years behind bars and a fine of $11,000.
A message left for Michalski on Saturday was not immediately returned. Online court records did not list a defense attorney for her.
Prosecutors say the girl doesn’t know how many times Michalski slammed her head into the wall. The girl’s mother called police Thursday afternoon.

hmmmmm, black and white words only describe a fraction of the situation. I am not saying this is anything that I find exceptible, but, we don't know the history of this family, we don't know if this girl is or was abusive, etc. Of course when we hear the word child, we automatically go on auto pilot of believing that all children are the stereotypical child. That isn't always the case. I am not sure what could be so bad to make a person do this to a child, nor do I believe she should go unpunished, but there are obviously problems in this family unit that need to be addressed. Stable environments don't usually experience these types of incedents.

woodsman is probably trying to draw a parallel with the Rivers case. The difference is not the age of a child, but the intent to cause harm. The law always deals more harshly with those who intend to cause harm. Even so, since this does not sound like "substantial" or "great" bodily harm, it probably falls under misdemeanor battery and that carries a maximum sentence of 9 months in jail. If the child abuse laws are operative (perhaps not in the case of a dispute where the adult did not have the color of parental authority), that could extend the sentence to as much as two years. That may depend on whether she shows continued effects from the beating.

Do the two reside at the same address? Did the niece require medical treatment? Was she able to attend the job interview? There is something fishy about this story....

It sounds like "Auntie" has a loose screw some place. She probably needs some time (jail) to get it fixed.

You people don't know the whole story. So your 2cents doesn't mean anything! Their is a whole lot difference between a three years old & a 17 year old. So we'll see, abuse a three year old,get probation. So if their is a pattern in the court system here, should be probation. We'll see.

The crazy lady will walk with "Huber" and "Small Fine" Our court system is harder on "Speeding tickets than Child Abuse" I like how the Court System has controll over our pain and makes these ridiculus deals without our consent! I think the courts need to consult with the victim first on what is a fair punishment! If your Guilty no DEAL!!!!!

Why would this not be considered child abuse? The girl is only 17. This was completely uncalled for and I hope the aunt gets what she has coming to her.

There is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON for ANYONE to have their head slammed against a wall....it doesnt matter WHAT this teenager may or may not have done....

ImJustSaying: I can understand what you are getting at about a teenager's attitude just taking a person to the limit which, in some people's minds, may account for ONE slam (however, I do not agree with even one). But it absolutely does not even remotely begin to excuse repeatedly slammings...This situation is very sad and disturbing.

I'd like to know what really went on. The girl could have been so snotty and disrespectful to her aunt for so long that the aunt finally had it with the brat, and clobbered her. Not that it's OK, but I'm just sayin...

How sad when things like this happen. I pray the system provides the necessary help.

I pray she gets her due time as well, but do you think that justice on Earth will be near what it is afterwards?
