Update: Favre coming back with Vikings

By ASSOCIATED PRESS   Tuesday, August 18, 2009 - 10:58 a.m.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — Brett Favre is coming back for more.

The 39-year-old quarterback turned his back on retirement for the second time in as many years, agreeing Tuesday to play for the Vikings.

Favre took a morning flight on a team plane from Mississippi to Minnesota, arrived to cheering fans outside the team’s practice facility and was in a helmet and pads less than 90 minutes later. His red practice jersey was the familiar No. 4, the same number he wore for years with the rival Green Bay Packers.

The team confirmed a deal was done to The Associated Press, but terms were not immediately disclosed.

This is Favre’s second comeback. A year ago, he came out of a short retirement to join the Jets.

Favre had arthroscopic surgery to fix his throwing shoulder in May and three weeks ago told coach Brad Childress he would stay retired. The Vikings wrapped up training camp last week — Favre was never a big fan of training camp — and beat Indianapolis 13-3 in their preseason opener Friday. They even got an encouraging performance from quarterback Sage Rosenfels, who has been competing with Tarvaris Jackson for the starting job.

All that goes out the window with Favre returning to add to a resume that already includes nearly every NFL career passing record.

His zinger of an arm and toughness in the pocket are a combination few possess. With an offense he says he could operate in his sleep, Favre seems to fit well with Minnesota — epecially given the Vikings’ problems finding a reliable quarterback since Childress took over in 2006.

The Vikings have Pro Bowl players all over their roster, with reigning NFL rushing leader Adrian Peterson in the backfield and a dominant defensive line. No matter who’s behind center, they ought to be in position to defend their NFC North title.

To win the conference, and perhaps that elusive Super Bowl, they’ll need stability at the sport’s most critical position.

Favre has wrestled with retirement for most of this decade and the will-he-or-won’t-he saga became an annual offseason drama for the Packers, his longtime home. In Green Bay, the latest news elicted a few shrugs, little more.

A few months after Favre’s tearful goodbye news conference in March 2008, Green Bay traded him to the Jets when he tried to come back, only to learn the Packers were committed to Aaron Rodgers. Favre started strong in New York, but faded down the stretch amid problems with his throwing arm and, with another “I’m done” announcement, headed for his second retirement.

The Jets released him from his contract right after the draft and soon after, the Vikings were openly expressing interest. Favre spent the summer working out in Mississippi and led everyone to believe he was on his way back to the NFL until last month.

“It was the hardest decision I’ve ever made,” Favre told ESPN then. “I didn’t feel like physically I could play at a level that was acceptable.”

The next day, Childress was asked whether there was a chance the Vikings would still pursue Favre. He said: “Not from my standpoint, no.” Owner Zygi Wilf reiterated that pledge on the first day training camp.

And yet here comes Favre, who turns 40 in October and said last month he didn’t think he had enough left to get through a full season.

“I had to be careful not to commit for the wrong reasons,” Favre said then. “I’m 39 with a lot of sacks to my name.”

He has a lot of interceptions to his name, too, more than any other quarterback in NFL history. The last time Favre appeared in the playoffs — a bitter loss at Lambeau Field by the Packers to the New York Giants in the NFC Championship game following the 2007 season — he put up one of his worst performances in recent memory.

whythink - i was referring to farves entire body of work against the bears, not just the seasons i care to remember of forget.

As for Cutler having a better season than Rodgers last year that must have been in whythink world, not the NFL. Cutler had more yards than Rodgers but Rodgers had a higher completion percentage, more touchdowns, less picks and a an overall QB rating seven points higher than the whiny beeotch in Chicago who is already blaming his receivers for his mistakes.

The Bears traded their starting quarterback (and the second best quarterback in the division last year) plus two first round picks to obtain Cutler who now may be the third best quarterback in the division behind Rodgers and possibly Favre now that he is with the Queens.
.
I am not going to waste time and space by posted stats, you can find them at NFL.com. However, Orton vs. Cutler...not even close, Cutler is 200x the QB Orton will ever be.
Cutler and Rogers are close because they are both young and will continue to improve. That said, it is a FACT that Cutler put up better numbers than Rogers last year so to argue Rogers is better is at a minimum...a reach.
.
Way to upgrade Chicago.
.
Thanks!
.
At least Bears fans are used to losing to Favre a couple of times a season already.
Oh no, a packer fan with no memory of the last few seasons Bears v. Pack with Favre as the Pack QB. The Bears OWNED Favre his last few seasons with GB. Early on, yes the Bears stunk but once they got good, Brett couldn't beat them...certainly not TWICE a YEAR.
.

.
Bears won 6 of last 8 versus Favre and GB.
.
I have read some pretty factually inaccurate statements on this website before but none as easy to prove FALSE as yours.
.
Obviously, you have no clue about the NFL.

Brett just wanted to be near his friend kicker Ryan Longwell in MN so he has somebody to play golf with and Brett heard there is good golf courses in MN. Can't wait to see the Vikes play the Pack. If Brett didn't get hurt later in the year and as he should have, taken himself or the coaches taken him out later in the season when the Jets (whom looked really good thru midseason) fell apart mostly due to Brett's poor throwing and screwing up. Should be a good matchup vikes vs. pack vs. da bears this year and at least this will keep their boring division something to talk about this year if and when Brett plays. Oh yah, da Bears still suck!

Wow Somebody is still living in the 90's
The Bears were 7-3 against GB during the Grossman-Orton era with 6 of those victories against the all mighty Farve led packers.
Cutler is the best QB in the north with or without brett playing. Erin will be a bust...

whythink - Brett has had problems against pressure defenses the last few years, he is not as accurate and seems to throw more INT's. The Packer's D will be ready this year!

And why wouldn't a Packer fan wish bad luck on Brett? It's not like we want any other QB to do good in our division (unless you have them on your FFL team).

It is like McMahon because the move doesn't mean jack. Players move all the time. Reggie played for Carolina his last year. You can still appreciate him as a player and for what he did in Green bay, yet boo him come sunday in the purple pansy suit.

Oh, and the Bears still suck!

vader,
It will take a year before that D is any good and I think Brett has played vs. a D. Capers 3-4 before so I doubt it will cause him any problems.
.
I think bear fans are the really winners in all this...really they can't lose.
.
If Brett and the Vikes dominate and win the superbowl the Pack fans are hurt way more than the bear fans. Meanwhile the Vike fans have to live with the, "you needed Brett Favre to win your first Superbowl."
.
If Brett and the Vikes fall on their face the Bears win the division. They are clearly the 2nd best team in the division (on paper of course).
.
The only way the Bear fans lose in this is if Brett and the Vikes beat them to knock them out of the playoffs. That would hurt.
.
Either way, as a Bear fan, I can smile knowing that many Packer fans now wish ill will on Brett Favre and Viking fans now are counting on Brett Favre to be their savior. That is just crazy.
.
Oh and this is nothing like McMahon signing with GB. After the superbowl and his injuries McMahon became a journeyman QB. Heck he played for the Vikes before the Pack.
.
Regardless, thank you Brett, this season will be one of the most interesting and fun in many years.
.
Besides, a couple more picks from you to the Bears will complete your legacy for me.
.
Should be fun!

So Brett is on the Viqueens squad, not much different than when McMahon joined the Pack except for starting. I don't know what SarahB1 was talking about, the Pack looked pretty good in the first preseason game. I guess the bomb to Driver was a snoozer, huh? The running game was better, but does not make you sit at the edge of your seat waiting for an interception, as when Brett threw the ball. I like Brett as a player, and he does a lot of charity work. But the Packs new D will have him looking at Lambeau turf the whole game.

The sad fact IS that Brett Favre Has become a joke. He HAS become an athlete that just doesn't know when to call it a day. He HAS demonstrated that he is no longer capable of making a decision and sticking with it. He is certainly not the first to not know when it is time to go, and more than likely, he will not be the last. His reasons are unclear but if you read his many statements or watched his many interviews, the man is a politician in the making. Sad. Sad that such a talented pro athlete is making such an arse out of himself. I have never been a Packer fan, BUT I know who I will be rooting for in a couple games this season, and it won’t be for Prima Dona. JMO

Farve is no joke, he is the real deal. Some athletes walk quietly into the sunset, some hang on for as long as they can. Obviously, age and wear and tear on his body will be a challenge to him at this point in his career, but he feels that he still has something left to give to the game that he loves and the Vikings agree. It's his choice, folks, and if you don't like it, I guess it's your choice to be unhappy about it. The way players move from team to team these days, I'm surprised that it is even an issue. Remember, it's his butt that is on the line, not yours. ;-)

I love that people blame this all on Brett Favre. You really think that no one in the football industry knew what he was thinking? They have gotten major headlines for this for three years, made millions of dollars in merchandise and still are. Why do you think they started making the jerseys before he even said he was playing for the Vikings the first time?? The NFL knows what is going on with Brett Farve and he is playing you all... lol It's pretty funny really. I say, people need to lighten up. If you are using him as a role model, that is your choice. He plays football for a living... he's worked hard, played hard and lived hard... He has a great family and even still has some die-hard fans out there. skinnypuppy - I think more people are smart enough, even kids, to realize they can't do what Favre is doing. You're statement doesn't hold much water. The NFL is a business, each team is a business, and as businesses they are going to do what they can to succeed. For the owners of the Vikings, it is signing a veteran QB who knows the system and just made the team better than what they had, period. Why are you so worried about the Vikings backups? Both of them had the chance to be starters in previous seasons, and neither had proven to be worthy of a starting position. Pro football is a business, period, and will always be run as such.

Not a packer fan nor a favre fan (not even a football fan really) - but I am all too familiar with favre's on again off again retirement - and I feel no betrayal to him or a team when I say that I see him as a disgrace as a role model. No wonder kids today (and many adults as well) think they can have any number of chances to succeed at school or in life! They see adults like him abuse a system (get out of training camp, potentially cost other players their positions/jobs/dreams, make more $ than anyone is worth who simply plays a silly game) and think they can too. My "favorite" quote is when he said he unequivocally would never return to football. This goes beyond changing one's mind and into dishonesty in my book, or perhaps he is severely bi-polar and needs some meds or therapy for a mid-life crisis he plays out publically and shamefully IMO. Pathetic. And shame on the football organizations that enable this wishy-washy abusive bull in the name of the almighty dollar. Just as sickening as the crap Sanford pulled here in Janesville this week. Loss of loyalty and "ethics" on both sides.

How many times did he willingly acknowledge, after a huge Packers loss, that yeah, maybe he was a little too hurt to play afterall with that stupid thumb injury he just didn't want to bother with letting heal by sitting out a game or two? But he didn't seem to want to break any streaks he had going. That is, afterall, way more important than getting a win for all the other players on the team. Everyone else is finally seeing in him what I saw all along. He didn't care about the Packers, didn't care about the Jets and he'll never care about the Vikings.

I guess he just cant leave the lime light (or he needs the money as his investments are not doing so good- speculation on my part).

Does he even care about the sport or is he just in it for the records? It would be a huge mistake for GB to retire his jersey. Give the number to a third string kicker.

Go Brett! He is one of the best things that ever happened to the Packers. I will be watching him in whatever color he wears!! The man is one of the best QB's ever and his love for the game is second to none. Sorry the Packer organization couldn't suck it up when they had the chance at a "superior" QB! Male EGO!!

From MSNBC: "Several media outlets reported that Favre has agreed to a one-year deal worth around $12 million. Favre will start Friday night in the Vikings' exhibition, ESPN reported.

ESPN also reported that Favre has a slightly torn rotator cuff, discovered by Dr. James Andrews several weeks ago.

Will this never end????

And to Callitasiseeit: I beg to differ with "any former fan dissing him wasn't a true Green Bay fan". I am a Packer fan - I have cheered for the Pack thru the lousy coaches and the lousy managers and the 2-12 seasons (back in the day). I have supported the team thru the Tony-Mandarich-instead-of-Barry-Sanders draft season. People dissing Brett Farve ARE true packer fans, they are simply not Brett Favre fans.

So, what's the fan reaction the first time he sets foot on Lambeau dressed in purple?

Good for Brett! He's still better than the average NFL QB. If he wants to play, he should play. And make a ton of money!

Brat is brilliant!
Gets to miss all of the OTAs, skips a few weeks of training camp, can blow off at least two of those boring preseason games AND is given the keys to a team that is already a superbowl contender. PLUS he gets $10 million to extend his consecutive starts record. The hillbilly is no fool!
I just think there is no chance this will end well for Brat or the queens. Go Pack. Start designing blitz packages to pound his sorry butt into the carpeted concrete of the Metrodome.

What's the over/under on late hits on Favre in the two games between the Packers and Vikings this year? I'm setting it at 5.

Favre has lost nothing. You could see it last year with the Jets He had exceptionally high QB ratings until his shoulder injury. I would take a healthy Favre over most NFL QB's playing today. If Favre stays healthy the Vikings are going to be an exciting team. They have probably the most potent running game in the NFL and combine that with Favre's screen passing ability, WOW!

I don't see Brett being controlled by Childress, like he was with Holmgren. That means more balls to pick off for the Packers defense.

In years to come, I'm sure he will sit down and write is memoirs. Hopefully he will be able to explain his thought processes that led him into looking like a total jerk (keep in mind I didn't and will never call him a jerk).

Maybe Bart Starr needs to pay him a visit and talk to him about honor vs $$.

Good for him if thats what he wants. He will always be one of my favorite Packers and one of the best to play the game. Any former fan dissing him now wasn't a true Green Bay fan and anyone thinking he is the answer for the Viqueens is dreaming. Can't wait to see the 3-4 defense and the new blitzing schemes when we play the Vikes.

It's not $12 million per year. It's $10 - $12 million for the contract - length undisclosed, but I would guess 2 years, and it's pending a physical.

By all reports (other than this one) this is a done deal. The most bothersome thing about this for me, other than the media covering Favre to death, is that I hate to see once great athletes hang on too long and go out with a fizzle. Brett had the perfect opportunity to retire after a great season in 2007 and cement his legacy as one of the greatest players, and Packers, ever. I don't fault him for wanting to play as long as his body will allow, but I don't think he's still got the skills to be out there every week. He's a Hall of Famer with nothing left to prove. The only thing that could come of this is an injury that definitely ends his career, or a terrible season that hurts his legacy.
*
On the lighter side, I love hearing all the Viqueens fans cheering for him after bashing him for the past 17 years.

Go for it Farve, you will still be too old to play well. Sorry to everyone that I upset with that comment but you can't hide the truth, he is too old and too damaged to be competitive any more. He was the best, keyword there is was.
