Dry conditions plaguing Wis. outdoor enthusiasts
WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) — The dry conditions plaguing farmers in central and northern Wisconsin are causing problems for some outdoor enthusiasts too.
The state Department of Natural Resources reports many rivers in northern Wisconsin are running well below normal levels.
The DNR says that on some popular rivers, canoeists and kayakers have to maneuver around more rocks and pull their boats through low-water spots.
The agency says storms that recently dropped up to 2 inches of rain across southern and central Wisconsin produced less than a half of inch of rain in the northern region.
The governor on Wednesday declared a drought emergency in 41 counties. That makes it easier for the DNR to approve permits to farmers to divert river or lake water for crop irrigation.

Thankfully much of this area got anywhere from 2-5" of rain last night. Nowhere near enough to end the drought, but its a good start.
