MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A state Senate committee has unanimously approved raising the fine for violating Wisconsin’s no-call list from $100 to $1,000.

The five-member Senate Committee on Small Business, Emergency Preparedness, Technical Colleges, and Consumer Protection approved the proposal on Thursday.

It now goes to the full Senate. If approved, it moves on to the Assembly.

There are about 1.7 million households on the state’s no-call list for telemarketers. The recent expansion of the list to cell phones prompted 670,000 more registrations.

The Wisconsin Realtors Association and National Federation of Independent Businesses have said their groups oppose the bill.
