Two people were killed after a rollover accident on Interstate 90/39 on Thursday afternoon, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol. The crash occurred shortly after 3 p.m. when the driver of a pickup truck attempted to pass another vehicle on the right.

The vehicles collided when the pickup driver attempted to cut into the left lane too quickly, Wisconsin State Patrol Sgt. Greg Jenswold said.

The pickup driver was thrown from his vehicle after the collision and died at the scene from his injuries. A passenger in the truck had to be cut out by firefighters and was transported to Janesville's Mercy Hospital where he or she died.

The identities of both the driver and passenger were withheld pending notification of family members.

The driver of the second car was not injured during the accident, according to the state patrol. Traffic in the area was delayed in both directions after the accident but was moving slowly by 3:30 p.m.

Slow Down!

All I can say is slow down. Just this morning while going north on 90, in the left lane, WITH THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC, I was passed aggressively on the right by a pick up truck, who then quickly had to change lanes in front of me because there was a vehicle in the right lane (that the rest of the flow of traffic in the left lane was passing). And for what....to save 15 seconds of time? I don't know what happened yesterday, but with any tragedy, lessons need to be learned, and hopefully people will be a little more safe on the roads.

Ok I have to add my two cents. First who cares where someone is from. All drivers need to slow down and FOLLOW THE RULES OF THE ROAD AND THAT INCLUDES SPEED LIMITS! The law does not say go as fast as traffice just to keep up. Speed limit signs are posted and it is illegal to go over them. Doesnt matter what lane you are in. If you do chose to go slower THEN THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT, then you should drive in the right lane. But to be angry because someone is not going fast enough according to traffic is wrong. I feel really sorry for the families involved. Too much road rage out there. People just need to be more respectful, period!

Digital, it was a black Ford Ranger with a diamond plated toolbox in the box of the truck. Driver was probably in his 50's (best guess) and passenger was in 20's or 30's.

Blue21, I understand man. This is the 2nd severe accident I've been witness to this year alone, and the first one included good friends on a motorcycle. I'll NEVER forget that day, and I remember thinking to myself, 'I don't know how these EMT's can do this everyday'. I found ALOT of new respect for those who serve us everyday. Blame can go around later. It serves no purpose now. I highly doubt there was any alcohol involved, but I also can't say either way. It just really hit me how one second you're driving on your way to do your daily tasks, etc, and the next second life is over. I think we all need to keep that focus. Those people had plans and families and it was all over in a split second and can happen to anyone at anytime. I agree with you too about rubberneckers. I was SO angry...I was trying to get traffic flowing again in a safe manner, obviously, and people just HAD to take a look. And I understand, but you're right. "get out an take a look then" then maybe you'll 'get it'. Just show some respect and move on, unless you wanna swap shoes with those on scene.

To quell speculation, after speaking to a relative of one of the deceased, both driver and passenger were local and there was no indication of alcohol involved. Simply a tragic accident. My condolences to the families.

fruitjacket...thank you.

I used to be a FF/EMT. USED to be.
One bad accident, caused by a drunk driver ended my career. I still have nightmares.
It's amazing that people blame drivers from other states, etc. for what happens.
It doesn't matter when someone dies!

The depressing thing to me were the gawkers. I wanted to tell the people, "You really want to see? Come up close, see! Then YOU have the nightmares, not me." See the broken faces, the children watching their parents die at the side of the road while you want to gawk at the accident that's making you late for your trivial little date.

Sorry, had to get that out.

I was there today. I was riding with my Dad home from a business meeting in Beloit. I didn't see how it happened, but I saw this mans truck flip about 4 times. The driver was ejected up into the median and the passenger was hanging out of the truck with only his seatbelt holding him in. YOU don't know what caused this, so speculating is fruitless. I know how it is when you say "well, they probably deserved it", or "that's what going too fast gets ya", but when you see one man barely clinging to life, women who also stopped behind us to help, crying incessently and another man who's mouth was filled with blood and taking his last gasps of life, you might think differently. Show some freakin respect. They were humans and I watched them both die and you better believe it'll change your life.

It doesn't matter what state your from a bad driver is a bad driver, Maybe this guy was in a hurry because of an emergency at home or with someone he loves, that doesn't excuse his aggressive driving but we have all been in a hurry before for what ever reason, the bottom line is two people lost there life on the road tonight lets just all be thankful is wasn't one of our loved ones.

I drove by this accident going east, and the poor individual was lying dead in the median...( a passer by was aiding the victim with a blanket). My heart hurt to see this, and I hope those of you who make snide remarks will refrain and think about it maybe being your family member ....

You think drivers are slow/ bad down there? Try driving in MN between the cities and St Cloud. It's far worse... I promise you that.

JA67, how about making comments based on facts, not just prejudges that you have. Maybe Illinois drivers write comments how how terribly slow and dangerous Wisconsin drivers are in Chicago when they write into their local papers. Why can't their just be different driving styles and comforts, regardless of where we pay too much for our plates.

Why does it matter if he was an IL driver? He is dead. Do you know that he was in a hurry for no reason at all? Were you there?

I drive the interstate everyday, and I agree that IL drivers tend to be more aggressive, but that does not mean that I haven't been run off the road by any WI drivers. IL tourists bring a lot of money to our state, and although they may be annoying drivers, I don't think that makes this story any less sad if he were to be from IL.

SarahB1: Ah, I missed that then. Such good timing, tho. But still, drivers like this need to be stopped. I've seen them, you've seen them, everyone has seen them.

I wonder if this was the guy who nearly ran my mother off the road on I-90 Eastbound shortly before 3:00PM near the first Janesville exit? She said this guy was driving like a maniac, cutting lanes and speeding. Forced his way into her lane, and she had to break to avoid slamming into him... the timeframe here seems right too.
