New idea: 16-day deer hunt
HAYWARD, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board gets its first look at a proposal to expand the state's tradition-bound November deer hunt to 16 days.
The board meets Wednesday in Hayward. It will hear an advisory committee's recommendation that the best way to control the whitetail herd is to switch from a nine-day to a 16-day firearms season, starting in 2010.
The 11-member committee was named to come up with alternatives after the board decided to abolish the earn-a-buck program, which hunters disliked. It required them to shoot a doe before they could take a buck in areas where there are too many deer.
The committee's recommendations include two proposals — one starts the longer season a week earlier than normal and the other starts it on its traditional opener, the Saturday before Thanksgiving.

If you get the chance, take the WDNR Survey on this subject. They want to keep bow hunters in the trees during the gun hunt, have 2 -4 hunts prior to the traditional hunt, and after your first buck, you must earn the next buck with 2 or 3 doe. THERE ARE NOT AS MANY DEER AS THEY SAY! If the Gazette checked into it, they could find the DNR actually admitted to using the wrong factor in their count. We used to drive out at dusk and count 75-100 deer every night. Now if we are lucky we can see 20.

The earn a buck was not completely abolished. It's still in a large portion of the lower part of the state. I really wish those in charge would stop wording it as if it's a full state ban. It's not. If you're going to make it a 16 day hunt, do so in the entire state and lose the earn a buck.
