Doyle declares drought emergency
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Gov. Jim Doyle has declared a state of emergency due to drought conditions in 41 counties.
The declaration issued Wednesday will allow the Department of Natural Resources to expedite farmers’ request for temporary irrigation permits to divert stream or lake water to irrigate their crops.
The temporary permits would be in effect until Sept. 11, unless extended by the Legislature.
The latest crop progress report issued by the USDA found that more than half of the state’s soil moisture is considered short or very short. The problem is the worst in northern Wisconsin.
A list of the affected counties is in the executive order: http://www.wisgov.state.wi.us/docview.asp?docid=17319.

Well, obviously, Doyle has consistently mismanaged the rainfall during his administration.

Even though we did just have a pretty good rain here in our area, it was much needed. One of the reasons some "flooding" or run-off occurs is because the ground is so dry and hard, it just can't absorb the rain at the rate it is coming down. It may not be as bad here as up north, but it has been very dry here, also. A little more next week would be welcome!

Joan, read the list of counties in the executive order, they are all northern counties. Most areas up north are in D2-D4 drought conditions which is getting really bad. D5 is the worst.
