MADISON—The number of Wisconsin residents receiving food stamps continues to rise.

The state Department of Health Services says more than 560,000 people are enrolled in Wisconsin's FoodShare program. That's an increase of 33 percent since last year, and represents one in 10 Wisconsin residents.

Department Secretary Karen Timberlake says the jump is due largely to the economy, but she says recent changes have made it easier for people to sign up.

People can now apply for benefits online or over the phone, and they can receive the money in the form of a debit card.

Timberlake says the average participant is getting roughly 14 percent more in benefits this year thanks to the federal stimulus package.

It is so hard to find a job that actually pays well right now. All that is hiring is Burger King and Walmart. For a full (whats min wage right now?)$7.25/hour?? That isn't nearly enough to pay rent, let alone pay for power and groceries.

And people are going to school now in hopes of getting better jobs... How are they supposed to pay for their bills while they are in school full time and working these crappy jobs? In Rock county you cannot get any kind of state aid while you are in school unless you have children. So that is almost punishing people for wanting to get better lives and to get a higher education so they can get better jobs that pay more then min. wage and don't come with a free grease meal for ever 8 hours worked.

I just think it is sad that people have to live the way they do.

One in ten is a depressing number, but is pretty much in line with unemployment levels.

ozzman: We're not talking about welfare, but about food aid. Statistics also don't back you up, as more people receive aid in hard economic times, and fewer in better times. What does this mean? Well, that people are dying to get off this aid.

We need to help people keep their houses too, so that the real estate market doesn't get any worse than it is.

I would attribute the increase to high unemployment and a weak economy. In May of 2008, Unemployement in Rock County was 4.8%, by May of 2009 it was over 13%.

Welfare becomes a trap because the people who are on it have no incentive to get off it if welfare is all they have ever known. The never ending cycle will continue and Wisconsin will continue to lose productive people due to the EXTREMELY high tax rate to states with lower taxes. The influx of unskilled labor in wisconsin is growing while the skilled and educated workers are leaving due to taxes and fewer job opprotunities here. Wisconsin needs to stop being so generous with welfare benefits.

i dont know where she got her (timberlake)numbers from, but the only people i see getting help in rock county, are not even from this country.i believe if someone needs help they should get it,even if their not form this country.this county will not help anyone, they dont care how little their paychecks and their paying their bills, their kind enough to give you a few food stamps, like their doing someone a favor,i got this info watching my friend i work with trying to get some help, she works part time and gets child support when it shows up.they told her she makes to much money.lol what a joke.and talk about rude, they take the cake,i think they are a little bit meaner than the dmv employees, and how that could be possible ill never know.so these facts must be coming from dane county because they sure dont help anyone in this county.

Maybe if they didn't make it so easy for illegal aliens to get welfare while people who were BORN here have a hard time getting it. All they have to do is come up here and pop out a bunch of little kids that they don't pay for. Yet I know people who work hard and are in school, not making enough money to make ends meet and can't get ANY help because they are in school! Something is messed up there.

Yea,
What other state out there that has generational families on welfare?
It has gotten to easy to receive welfare. There are people out there that are on welfare(not due to the economy) who are very capable of working. I agree, if you need it for awhile thats ok, but when i see family member after family member abusing the system, that sucks.....
