GERMANTOWN, Wis. (AP) — Prosecutors have charged a Dodge County man with killing a woman 10 years ago in Germantown.

Forty-nine-year-old Mark J. Libecki of Theresa faces one count of first-degree homicide in the death of Theresa Wesolowski.

A passer-by found Wesolowski’s body in the street in May 1999. She had been stabbed more than 45 times.

According to a criminal complaint, analysts matched DNA from her hands to Libecki. They also used DNA tests to confirm her blood was in Libecki’s vehicle.

Police arrested Libecki as he left work in Germantown early Thursday morning. Online court records did not list an attorney for him.

I don't see anything in this article that would raise any questions or suspicion about the chain of custody.

Law enforcement agencies throughout the country have evidence from old cases in secure evidence holding facilities right along with evidence from recent cases.

How does the age of the case have any bearing on evidence collection and holding?

hannah, that's about what I asked. It seems likely that to have tested the vehicle, though, they would have had to do so knowing he was their target, and coming so many years later, how likely is it he still had the same van? That's why I figure they took samples back then.

Wow, ljs64, high horse much? "Chain of evidence" is just as valid a term. Here it is used on an official FBI history of their crime lab:

Wow. Some questions here about the chain of evidence. They must have had samples but only recently (a couple of years?) tried DNA testing, or maybe earlier attempts were not successful? They must have been able to search at least the van at the time.
