Committee: Corvina's needs to do more to control bar
The owner of Corvina's bar says she has worked to improve security and control at her bar, but some members of the Janesville Alcohol License Advisory Committee said this morning that she hasn't done enough.
The committee asked owner Janelle Barlass to return for the next committee meeting in September.
Barlass was asked to come to the August meeting to give an update on Corvina's, 123 E. Milwaukee St. She said she has increased security, tightened control of the music played and made eforts to keep the walkway in front of the bar clear.
Deputy Chief Steve Kopp of the Janesville Police Department said police have been involved in six incidents at Corvina's in the last month and that he's not alarmed by the number or type of incidents.
But committee Carol Engebretson said she's disappointed by a lack of improvement at Corvina's. She's concerned Barlass took two weeks after the last committee meetings to contact police and still hasn't held a conflict resolution training for her staff, she said.

I worked the Door @ Spanky's at the end and problems do come from the music played and the atmosphere. HipHop & Rap are not the problem but not playing to the crowd is. The Bar/Club is in the business to make money and be successful. Bouncers/Security do need to "ENFORCE" the rules and keep people in check. Black, White, Brown, Yellow does not make a lick of difference we all bleed the same color. I hope to see Corvina's turn this around and be successful. Just because someone has a "felony" or multiple on their record does not give anyone the right to say that they do not have the right to work.

She's got things under control...just look at the other article and see who she has as security chief. He's only a felon with multiple convictions (check CCAP)!

again you small town morons cant figure out why people don't want to come here. you guys are prejudice, racists and the city police department is a reflection of that. as a minority who has grown up here and lived in other cities i know what janesville has always been about. there are no real problems here in janesville to the point where any of this is necessary. be happy you dont have bars like in chicago were people are murder or beat into a coma on a daily basis. you cops who liked rap/ hip hop when you where in school try to act like you don't like it now and then try to stop minorities from having a good time just because of their ethnicity are lame. move to a real cities with real problems and you would appreciate those minorities up here because they aren't trying to kill you because your a cop. what is wrong with you guys, go eat some donuts or something this is really really lame

SarahB1, I know of a case where a friend of mine was hit by an underage drunk driver, his insurance company sued the bar that served the underage person. This case just never made it in the paper.

There are too many details being left out and the race issue is grabbing all of the attention. I am not defending Corvina's or its owner, it is not a well run business. The Gazette fails to note in its rundown of police contacts per bar, the fact that traffic stops in the bar's parking lot are also counted. Walk-thru was noted. Who is controlling how many walks the police will take in a bar? I think the Gazette is the one playing the race card here, in the wrong way. Race should have never been mentioned besides the owners sorry defense against the commitee. Music makes ALL the difference and they need to remember, as a bar they reserve the right to refuse service to ANYONE. I know this for a fact because I work at a bar who had similar problems in the past. We didn't need the Gazette or commitee to tell us. So if you have a problem with your clientele kick their asses out!

Remember the bar called times...what happen huh? The owner closed it down because people from b-town had gun outside of the club & he had three police call. I have seen this myself. The owner cut out gangster rap from the juke box but that did not stop the problem. The problem is not about white or black it`s GANG`S AND GUN!!!!!!!!! THINK PEOPLE.

I don't think some of you read the previous articles... police were called because of a stabbing, if I remember correctly that happened down the block in which the UNDERAGE MINOR had been served at this bar. Please tell me how this involves racisim? Should the police have questioned the race of the suspect and the victim and then decided whether or not to follow up on the call? This whole race issue has gotten so out of control. There is trashy people in every race. omg, that man that murdered that poor woman infront of her son and then led the police on a high speed chase was white,(The police must not have realized this otherwise they would have let him go!!) JJackson do they offer a course in commen sense at the college you are attending? maybe you should check it out. BTW, I am WHITE and my boyfriend is BLACK!!!!

Have any of you been to a hip hop club in your life? You go to Madison or Chicago and usually it is nothing but fun. I think they just need to tighten the security. I can't stand it when hip-hop or metal becomes the scapegoat.
It's just music kids. Remember when people were shooting themselves because playing a record backwards told them to? Was it really the music or just ignorant people?

I was a dj at a bar in south beloit for about 6 weeks they had eliminated the problem by kicking out anyone who caused problems and then put there names on the entrance door, unfortunately they had eliminated there entire clientel, what are you gonna do?

woodsman-Furthermore, if you read my previous post I don't wear baggy cloths that's falling off me. I wear baggy clothes that stays on my waist but looks baggy. If you don't know nothing about the style, then don't say anything about it. That's like me putting down people that dress in all black with black eyeliner and everything.I think it's called "Goth." I know nothing about that style so why would I put it down.
What was your style back in the 1920's when you were young?
You're just like a lot a lot people...look at our cloths and judge us! But you're shocked when you see us in a suit or doing a job making more money than you. And I guarantee I make more money than U. So if I were you I wouldn't dwell about a little typo on a discussion board that's really meaningless because no matter what we all say about this article, The City of janesville is going to do whatever they want. I said this in my post yesterday. No matter what this bar owner does...hiring more security, getting more cameras etc. The City will do what it wants because this bar is not catering to the crowd that this city wants it to cater to. The politics in this city is almost like a television show. It attempts to mold people and businesses to do things that they want them to do. But when those businesses or people fightback, then they're in the wrong and/or no body will listen to them. They want to portray this as a beautiful city that has NO CRIMES...Oh but wait a guy just robbed a pizza delivery person at gun point, there was a fight that esculated into a arm robbery a couple of days ago, MacGyver Bombs were set off in the city oh and a Milton High School employee that was jailed for sexual assault! Give me break, How many times did the Janesville National Enquirer do articles on these stories...ONCE! But they have did 3 or 4 articles about Corvina's...a bar that might lose it's liquor license. See the reason those other articles only got printed up once is because they all involved white males. While on the other hand, Corvina involves African Americans. So it's only normal, at least in this city, that the local newspaper stir this all up. That way when this liquor license committe log on to this site, read the article and the posts and think to themselves, "We have community support to close this establishment." Like I said, it's all politics. I think that one of these bar owners need to go to Illinois, Michigan or any of these bordering states and find a good lawyer that's licensed to practice law in Wisconsin, one that has no ties to this area and sue this city. And if you're wondering why I said find a lawyer in a bordering state, it's because lawyers here don't want to mess there reputation up here in this city by suing the city in which the work. And that's nothing against the lawyers here. But a lawyer that has no ties would go for it.

I have seen it before with other Establishments and other owners. What more can be done? You're not going to change the behavior of some patrons by adding more layers of security, and you'll probably make it worse. You can shut the bar down but the people will just move elsewhere. I've seen this over and over again here in Janesville. People on the sidewalk are a problem? What about the crowd from Rocky's all the way to Sporty's years ago? That's two city blocks of solid people. If the JPD isn't concerned then we shouldn't be concerned. They're the ones on the front line, after all.
