Few register as domestic partners in Rock, Walworth
The Rock and Walworth county courthouses weren't exactly overrun by couples signing up for the first statewide domestic partnership registry today.
Just four couples signed up in Rock County and one in Walworth County, according to the county clerks.
The registry, signed into law as part of the 2009-11 budget, offers same-sex partners some of the same rights afforded married people, including allowing them to take family and medical leave to care for a seriously ill partner, make end-of-life decisions and have hospital visitation rights.
A group wants the state Supreme Court to rule the registry invalid as violating the state's constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. The Supreme Court hasn't said if it will take the case.

whonellie - We're both very set in our beliefs. You think it's a choice. I know it's not. Your God and my God are definitely not the same guy. You read the Bible one way, and I read it another. We'll just have to agree to disagree and be done with it.

Well, as long as you admit that you are a hateful, intolerant bigot, I guess our conversation is done. Everyone got that?

Well Bealab, you got most of that right. But you are incorrect in saying that I am uneducated and incorrect saying that I am a Janesville resident. So, as you can see, just because you THINK something is a fact doesn't make it a fact.

Also include hatred, bigotry, and intolerance in that last response. They are also choices that narrow minded, uneducated citizens make.

Once again. Homosexuality is NOT a choice. Ignorance, however, remains a choice. Especially for Janesville residents like JustAskMe.

You are really out of touch with reality Bealab. Homosexuality IS a choice - there is no one that is telling us who WILL be a homosexual and who WON'T. I expect that when a man can't 'hit-it-off' with women, he CHOOSES to have sex with others that have also been rejected by women.

TheCiscoKid - Wow! Great message! I've always thought the same thing regarding interracial marriage and what would have happened if citizens would have been allowed to vote on whether it would be allowed or not. It frightens me to think of what the results would have been. Thanks for serving our country and fighting for ALL freedoms.

Back in the 1930's when my parents got married it was frowned upon and the people and kids they had were rejected by society. I'm talking about interacial marriges. Where would we be if people had the right to vote on my parents getting married? I'm not gay, But I'am an American who gave 5 years to his country. (USAF) I served my country for freedom, all types of freedom. Just what does it hurt to allow the gay community to be able to care for and be responsible for thier best friends life and decissions? If you were straight and single (lost your wife or husband) and had no one to turn to but a same sex friend, would that be so wrong for them to be responsible for you? Think about it people,, there is enough hate in this world,, why must we look for more?

I'd love to see all those promoting the myths in same-gender-attraction TRY to change their orientation given they think it's so simply a matter of choice instead of continually preaching their own predilections. Yes, there IS research to indicate genetics plays a role in gender inclinations and it is evident across many species. Instead of condemning those who with whom your personal philosophy disagrees, remember we live in a magnificently diverse and, yes, often challenging world; a nation where freedom to live according to our own "pursuit of happiness" prevails, and where the very best any of us can do for peace, fairness, and justice is find the good in others who also live according to their own orientations without condemning just because we're all not exactly and mundanely the same.

Yes whoanellie, your so-called love for homosexuals is abudantly clear. Especially after your comment about "aids and other things that affect these people". In regards to the Bible, I'm sure you do feel that homosexuality is a black and white issue. That's how you are choosing to interpret it. By the way, let me give you a black and white definition of Christianity - "one who manifests the qualities or spirit of Jesus Christ". Unfortunately, many so-called Christians don't really fit this definition. Don't worry. I love them anyway.

God says we should love the sinner and NOT the sin. And it is a sin. there is no research saying that the homosexuality lifestyle isn't a choice. It is and no matter what someone says, it was there choice to live like that. As for picking out bible verses if you really knew what the bible says you would know that some things are black and white and the subject of homosexuality is one of those issues! God specifically says homosexuality is WRONG!!!!

I hope gay couples don't let the comment about domestic partnerships becoming public record deter them from applying for a domestic partnership. Intimidation is one of the tools that the intolerant use to frighten others.

Homosexuality is NOT a choice. Homosexuals would tell you that. Unfortunately, many Christians choose not to listen to it. Regarding the Bible, Christians need to stop picking and choosing which scriptures they will follow. There are scriptures pertaining to being stoned for working on the Sabbath, selling your daughters into slavery, and not eating shellfish because that's an abomination. Instead of focusing on scriptures that are specific to the ancient laws of the time, how about focusing on the ones that are timeless such as "Love one another as I have loved you."

whoa: It was meant to be a little humor break, sorry to have offended you. Obviously I am happy in my marriage or I wouldn't be heading for year 21! Laughter is good for you, world would be pretty boring if everyone was serious all the time (not to mention not any fun).

I'm not sorry that I voted against same sex marriage, it is just wrong. Not a healthy life choice or right in the eyes of God. He calls it an abomination to him.I've been married 33 years and am happier than the day we married. I don't find it the same old sex, I'm more than happy in that department. Homosexuality is a CHOICE and it is wrong. That is why there is aids and other things that affect these people. God created man to be with a woman. Why do you think he destroyed sodom and gomorrah?

Well said, sannio. CONGRATULATIONS to all those "newly legal" domestic partners in Rock County! Yes, JustAskMe, this IS Wisconsin with a very long history of being a national leader in progressive initiatives; where fairness to ALL prevails more often than not; and where we know loving, committed relationships no matter what the genders build stronger families, communities, and culture.

You're married if you say you're married. No person or group of people can decide that for you. That's called the right to life, and you are the ultimate authority on how to live your life for better, or worse.

As a social conservative I support the registry. Now when a person gets hurt on the gay property they both get sued. Or, when one's business falls behind on taxes, all gay property and bank accounts can be lien and levied. No longer can the gays shelter property where straight married couples can't. When the gay couple does split up, the property should be split 50-50.

Ozzman, you make an excellent point. However the amendment itself is constitutionally questionable. The amnedment addresses two separate issues - 1. that marriage should be between one man and one woman. 2. that no relationship that is SUBSTANTIALLY similar to marriage shall be recognized. The state constituion does not allow for amendments to address more than one thing and thus shouldn't be allowed to stand. Therefore, I support the registry. I can tell you from personal experience canvassing in Rock County to try and defeat the amendment, there was significant support for domestic partnerships. People were just uncomfortable with calling it marriage. My partner and I will be registering this week.

I can't figure out why the term 'same-sex' is used so much when the term 'homosexual' already exists. Could it be that shame is involved?

The Supreme Court will probably take this one because it involves a possible violation of state law and, of course, this IS Wisconsin, not Iowa.

personally I dont care if gay people want to get married, I voted against the ban. that being said I find this to be a pandoras box ready to be opened. This law is a direct violation of our state constitution which was amended by the people of Wisconsin to ban gay marriage and any similar status. If we ignore one part of our constitution then what is to stop other laws from being passed that ignore other parts of our constitution. the best route to take would be to repeal the amendment not ignore it.
