Wisconsin swine flu recap
By The Associated Press
Here’s a look at Thursday’s swine flu developments in Wisconsin:
-- Gov. Jim Doyle declared a public health emergency after the number of probable swine flu cases in the state rose to five. The order directs the Department of Public Health to take all necessary means to respond to the flu situation, to distribute anti-viral stockpiles as needed, to make the medication available regardless of insurance coverage and to have the National Guard used to help if needed.
-- Officials said the state has submitted 228 suspected cases for testing. Results were pending on 41 cases, 182 had been ruled negative, the five were considered probable and none had been confirmed.
-- St. Anthony School in Milwaukee closed its two campuses Thursday and Friday as a precaution, asking 1,050 students in kindergarten through eighth grade to stay home.
-- The Milwaukee Health Department closed a fourth public elementary school in the city. The other three and one high school had been closed indefinitely on Wednesday.
-- A social services agency in Milwaukee canceled this weekend’s Cinco de Mayo festival after federal health officials recommended avoiding large groups of people. The event had been expected to draw as many as 11,000 people.
