Organizers work to expand food program
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — State agriculture officials are working to expand a program that brings local produce to schools in Wisconsin.
Nine communities are participating in the Farm to School program; including Eau Claire, Prairie du Chien and Viroqua.
Department of Agriculture spokeswoman Lora Klenke says her agency is working with the national service organization, Americorp, to add ten more communities to the program if funding is received. Americorps helps connect local growers with school food services.
Klenke says Americorp also helps organize field trips so students can meet a farmer who's supplying the food and learn how it grows.

I heard that there is a FREE community garden provided by the City of Hope on Joliet St. near Center Ave. This would be a great way to grow your own food and for that church to share with the community! Any other organizations doing that in Janesville?

Instead of dumping money into the ice rink, why not spend that money on a program like this?

People are going to have to understand the produce will cost a bit more initially, but the money will stay in and boost the local economy, not just go to pay for transportation of produce to travel from hundreds and even thousands of miles away, thus reducing the carbon imprint of the schools as well.
