JANESVILLE -- Homes in the vicinity of the 500 block of North Pine Street in Janesville are being evacuated Saturday morning because of a gas leak. No injuries were reported.

Janesville police and fire got the call at about 7:40 a.m. after something struck and ruptured a natural gas line. Alliant Energy workers were called to the scene. No other details were immediately available.

The leak is just north of Mineral Point Avenue and three blocks west of Mercy Hospital.

Well here it is Sunday A.M. I have read the paper this morning and not one word about the gas leak in it. Did they ever figure out what caused it? how long were the people evacuated from homes? went on line to see if i could find out anything but the paper here has not been updated for over a day!

Maybe this is the city's new plan to demolish all the historic areas for something new?

That's crazy. The exact same thing happened over in the Fourth Ward last month.

Workers digging to repair water main struck gas line. It was loud and very stinky! Thank god it is a beautiful morning. City provided a bus for those who needed to get warm and have a place to sit. Thanks Janesville! Everything is OK now.

Not everything repeated on a scanner is true. This, from someone who has listened to scanner traffic here for the past 19 years. Dispatchers relay to the responders the information they get from people who are calling in, and those people don't always get it right. -- Gazette reporter Frank Schultz.

something struck and ruptured a natural gas line.

Not something, City of Janesville work crew.

I think the Gazette should buy a scanner, Radio Shack and Farm & Fleet sell them.
