City council member forms coalition to address poverty
A Janesville City Councilwoman is organizing a poverty coalition to help address gaps in education, transportation, health care, food and shelter.
Kathy Voskuil says services are available, but she wants to put a plan in action and get the rest of the community to rally behind it. She's currently working with non-profit agencies and the City's Neighborhood Services Department to help form a solution. She says existing agencies could also come together to form a focus group.
According to the State Department of Workforce Development, the most recent figures show the Janesville Metropolitan Statistical Area has 13% unemployment, the highest in the state.

Nothing like a focus group to solve the problems related to poverty.

Back on topic, congratulations to Kathy Voskuil for taking the initiative to bring together this coalition.
To the resident gripers: I, for one, think Doyle is doing a very good job. I would also add that calling The Gazette a left-leaning newspaper destroys what little credibility you may have had.

Man you people gripe a lot! This is a nice article and instead of commenting on it you bash the Governor again. If you have solutions to the state and federal and world problems then step up and quit bitching all the time.

You're right, it's the fault of the voters who voted him in and continually back him.

Governor Doyle is not the problem, and you can count the left-wing newspapers in the United States on one hand !! FOX News has been behind the right-wing TEA party all the way.

Maybe we need to hang the sign up sheet to ax Doyle in the court house square in every town and village in the state. I'd bet the lefty's and this left leaning newspaper would find some obscure law for a reason to have it removed.

unknown, I understand the here and now, but it has been going on since before GM and all related businesses closed.
It has been occurring before this last year. Whenever we have the "top dogs" playing tricks-- increasing what the wealthy get and what the rest of us lose, it will be a losing situation for us. We must continue to band together and not have the 'poor me' mindset.
I grew up in a one-income family because that is what my parents chose to do. Mom gave up her management job that was the higher paying job so she could be at home with us and Dad continued to work in the airline industry. No, he wasn't a pilot. With all the overtime he picked up to support his family, it was still only $55,000 a year. Not only that, he worked in Chicago and we lived in Cleveland, OH. We rarely got to see him until we were able to finally able to move up here. Even then, he wasn't making all that. There were years that he was laid off or his union had them on strike. It wasn't fun. Those early years (in the 80s) were the hardest times I remember. We did not have a lot. We spent a lot of 'vacations' at Grandma and Grandpa's in Cleveland.
I, too, have been unemployed. It was the 2nd roughest time to get through (after growing up in the 80s). It stinks! Band together, it to shall pass.... after the potholes along the way!
It's not a poor-me situation. Look at it from a character builder. You WILL make it through!

In case you haven't noticed, other states and countries aren't doing too well in this downturn either. This is not a Wisconsin-only or even US-only recession, nor is it reflective of tax rates very much. In fact, the drop in US consumer spending is hitting the export markets of countries like China pretty heavily.
.
As to Voskuil's coalition, there are already a number of organizations working in these areas, of course. But it's good to see involvement by elected officials in these concerns and it could be a path to expansion or more effective distribution of services once needs are identified.
.
The trouble is, unknown is a good example of someone who does just need a job, and that has to be the top priority for Janesville and Rock County -- rebuilding the job market.

??????????? People still dont get it. Business sends their profits to off-shore tax free islands. NO MONEY TO U.S. Business sends jobs to foreign countries. NO JOBS IN U.S. Business pays itself millions of dollars in bonus's & salaries. GREED. Time to "smell the roses"

Perhaps if some of us out there stopped electing a governor that taxes and regulates the living crap out of everything you might be able to encourage a business to move to, or more importantly, stay in Wisconsin. But let's form a coalition, that should solve things. Why not go all the way and form a Blue Ribbon Task Force, that sounds even more official.
