Anti-tax protesters turn out for dreaded April 15

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Protesters in Wisconsin and elsewhere around the country are gearing up to rally against tax day with "tea parties."

Organizers say they're steamed at government spending since President Barack Obama's administration took over and are planning their own mini-revolts. The rallies are designed to echo the original Boston Tea Party more than 235 years ago.

The demonstrations are being held everywhere from Kentucky, which just passed tax increases on cigarettes and alcohol, to South Carolina, where the governor has repeatedly criticized the stimulus package. Large protests also are expected in Madison, Wis., California, New York and Atlanta.

usaret, That is a caution to people who have two jobs, or both work, or can be claimed by someone as a dependent. The money you are receiving because of the withholding change is not going to be taxable. If your situation is one of the above, enough tax might not be taken out.

Zoom: irs.gov "you should use the witholding calculator to ensure that the reduced witholding will not result in having too little income tax withheld (possibly causing you to owe taxes next year) if." This is from THE IRS IN REGARDS TO THE CHANGE IN WITHHOLDING THAT THE PRESIDENT AND CONGRESS PUT INTO EFFECT 1 APR 2009.
Just do the math: As previously stated, your withholding tax is reduced not your income, therefore you will have less held out but will still have to pay taxes on it next year when you file. The tax chart's were not changed just the withholding to allow you extra money this year.

It has to be those items, that plus interest is 70% of the budget. Zero growth is cutting benefits and raising the retirement age. Also cutting Medicare reimbursements when the baby-boomers are going to start drawing it. Could cut foreign aid, about 1% of the budget, or education, 2%, VA and government retirement benefits, 6%. The cuts have to come from where the majority of the money is spent.

It doesn't have to be just these areas, but yes holding these budget items to a zero growth is a start.

That horse left the barn years ago, the money is gone. The only way now is raise the tax limit, or lower benefits and raise retirement age. We can`t get the money back unless the government begins to run surpluses. And that is not going to happen. Cutting spending means cutting the big items, SS, Medicare, defense. See how far you get with that!

I propose that if we MUST contribute to this program that government leave the money for this alone and not steal/barrow/ it for other uses; as had been done for decades. Like I said, control spending.

Yep, same old argument. Raising the tax will fix it. When in reality, controlling the spending without increased taxation is ALWAYS better for the economy.

That's not true at all. GDP is around $12-13 trillion, and has been on the DECLINE (Hence recession)...National debt is over $11 trillion, and rising by the day. Most projections have it over $30 trillion within the next decade. Wait till social security goes bankrupt. That's when the whole house of cards will come CRASHING on down; as it will be at least $10 trillion to bail that out. We are pretty much screwed at this point. The numbers do not lie, and all roads lead to total economic collapse, no matter what any political hack tries to tell you.

I'm not advocating not paying your taxes, it is the law, just that we should have more of these rallies untill the government takes notice and finds they can't push us around anymore. Of all things, the president said he was "unaware" that these protests were even going on!! Was his head buried in the sand on tax day??? They had one right outside his residence for pete's sake!! Talk about selective ignorance!

Funny how angry many on the left are over these protests. Look at any protest the left does, if you want to see "orchestrated". Often times many of those protests are actually done by paid protesters who literally take marching orders to go around the country holding signs for whatever the cause may be.
.
Funny story: last summer I was heading over to Kenosha, and on hwy 50 coming into Bristol I ran into a group of idiots holding signs saying "China out of Tibet". I had the top of my convertible down, and shouted something like "China rules" as a honked my horn on the way by swerving at them a little bit!. Well, a few hours later, I ran into one of the protesters at the greyhound track, and he asked if i was the one who honked and swerved at them? I proudly told him: "oh yeah, that was me". He proceeded to tell me that he did not even know where China was on a map! He just wanted the $50 that some cook organizing group was paying him to hold the sign for 3 hours, so he could go gamble for the day! We shared a few laughs, I gave the guy a couple horses (both of which won), and we parted ways!
.
Hey; at least the tea party guys and gals actually had some real convictions! Hope you all avoid a government audit now! No doubt there were officials out there taking down license plate #'s!

I could not agree more. I don't agree with all this spending and I agree it shouldn't be made into some political game. I am just amused at how the "right" and the Paul Ryan's of our system are now so up in arms when they, no doubt, have contributed a lot to the situation. Too bad I had to work or I would have went. You're right superdave it wasn't just conservatives and if the mainstream media would have really reported this with no bias people would have seen that. it was Dems, Repubs, independents and everything in between! We are concerned with the way washington and our commander in theif especially are spending money we don't have. It wasn't necessarily taxes that was being protested, it just happened on tax day as a stand out day. I think that CNN was the worst at reporting, although local news media did not do a good job either. It was not backed by the rich, it was middle class people who just want the american dream back.. Our admistration is stealing it out from under our noses and no one is doing anything about it. Wake up people!! We are on the brink of socialism, don't let the biased media, from either side, detract you from what is really going on in washington and at the local level as well!!

Par18grif: Wrong. This is not one party against another. It's people, in general, who are afraid of what Washington DC is doing to this country. This pre-dates the Obama administration. Most people were against the TARP and the bailouts that happened DURING the Bush presidency. Of course, this big spending has continued (greatly) under Obama.

Nothing but "populist piffle" leftover from the Bush Administration. A convention of self-interested Consevatives with very short memories and a penchant for rewriting history. Went to the Tea Party and anyone who claims it was a sponsored event have no idea what is going on around them. Dem, Rep, people from all walks and all faiths are saying STOP SPENDING OUR COUNTRY INTO BANKRUPTCY/ Stop Taxing us into oblivion. Everyone is getting tired of watching our Leaders (Both Parties) sell us and our great Grandchildren down the river so they can solidify their political aspirations at our expense. I had the opportunity to observe on several occasions as some left and right wingers came in to slam the opposing party only to find that they were not there. Its a People Thing. How many Vets and Catholics like the idea of being labeled as an extremist by our Homeland security? Say no to Government control and take charge of your own destiny don,t let anybody lead you around like a sheep going to the shearer. Up until last nite I have been a CNN viewer for years but after watching their goofball reporter at the rally attacking the protesters I will not be watching them again anytime too soon. Stop letting others put words in your mouth and speak up. There will be a Tea Party coming to Janesville real soon. Just go and ask the people why they are there. I challenge you to do this. WAKE UP AMERICA.

You can call me paranoid, but I have seen this time and time again, in that the people who go to these protests (doesn't matter what the protest is) mysteriously wind up on some government list, and low and behold get audited every single year! Nixon and Clinton were notorious for using the IRS as a weapon to go after anyone who opposed their agenda. They really should have focused these more on the insane government SPENDING, and not the taxing aspect. Most citizens are not going to be paying any more in federal taxes (many will even pay less); as some have pointed out here. Your state and local taxes are really where your going to be getting screwed as almost every state in the country is in MASSIVE debt, but that's a whole different discussion.
.
The big issue is the federal SPENDING that has gone totally out of control. It does not matter who is in power, we are running up debt so fast, that the results will be catastrophic down the road. The government is doing the exact same things that the banks did in mass leveraging of debt. A model that is a sure fire way to lead to total collapse in the very near future.
.
While we borrow all this money that we leverage with, the Chinese laugh their a$$ off as they work the greatest scam ever in propping up our dollar so they can in turn demolish us with a trade multi billion $$ trade gap. The Chinese may eventually just stop buying our debt. They have all ready said they have grave concerns that's it's a bad investment. If they stop financing our debt, we will pretty much be screwed beyond belief; as the only way to sustain the massive government obligations we have will be by printing the trillions of $$$'s. An option that has worked wonders in countries like Zimbabwe, Mexico, Venezuela, ext.

usaret, you are incorrect. The Making Work Pay Tax Credit is a refundable credit of $400 per working individual. Instead of writing you a check, the Government is reducing your tax witholding until your receive an additional in your paycheck equal to $400. The amount of the credit will be computed on the your 2009 income tax return filed in 2010. You ARE effectively paying $400 less in taxes.

All I have to say is:
Your federal income tax withholding was adjusted so you would have more take home money each week or month. Please note that less was withheld but the income earned is STILL TAXABLE INCOME therefore when you file in 2010, your return will be smaller if you get one or you will have to pay more. How is that for a tax break for 95% of the working Americans. All compliments of Obama and friends. Happy Tax Day!

Its people like weeds, & highersatthanu that are the problem. They try & dissuade people from standing up because they're to lazy to do it themselves. Governments count on exactly those kinds of do nothing people, so they can keep their cushy jobs. And Zoom: The organizers of this tax party were year last year, AND had this same party last year. They have a lot more people listening this year because our government has gotten into the business of bailing out private industry's (that's socialism whether you like it or not).. handing social security out to illegal aliens.. the list goes on, but those are the two i'm angry about. I decided just this year.. even though i vote in every election, I have no right to bit(h, If i'm not willing to stand up for what i think is wrong. Something not instilled in children anymore by the majority of parents.

The bottom line is... people see this country's economy can not continue without collapsing, at the rate we're throwing money around to companies that were badly managed. We can't keep giving Social Security benefits to people who don't deserve them (i.e. children get SSI, Illegals get Social Security now when US born citizens have to jump thru loops just to apply, & get denied.. Now all you have to do is check the box Hispanic & your have way home. Not to mention.. They money the earn doesn't help our economy.. it helps Mexico's because they send it there, & most of them don't pay in because.. THEY'RE Illegals using STOLEN I.D.'s).. Ok.. I;'m getting angry again, so I'll stop here..

BTW.. did you guys know they stuck the Amnesty clause in this last stimulus package. YEP.. they couldn't get it through the honest way, so they slipped it through with almost no media coverage. Thats your new president. He's no different then the rest of the liers.

First off, immigrants pay sales taxes and since this is not a totalitarian country they can do with the money they earned what they want. If you want them to pay more get rid of income taxes and only have a sales tax.

There are many ways of avoiding taxes such as starting a non-profit, avoiding transactions that require taxation, moving to a state with a lower tax burden and VOTING!!!

If you don't like the system run for office or vote someone else in who won't fund the police, fire department, military, schools, prisons, courts, roads and so on. So, what should be cut? It seems as though most people want to complain but not really do anything about solving the problems.

The government will not listen or pay attention to peaceful protests. Any organization or peoples have had to unite and use violence, if necessary, to get their points across. Our government is blind and deaf to the people and care only about money and power and themselves. We need a leader to take charge and to get the people interested and riled up before it is too late. The middle class is shrinking so fast and that is why the government loves illegal workers so get the pay scale down to slave wages. Yet, these illegals send their money home and don't purchase big items here. The country suffers and this is what we have, high unemployment, and run away taxes and a government that does not listen to the people and never will until mass protests and demonstrations take place, like the blacks did and others to make these ignorant government officials listen to the people.
