City Council votes to allow alcohol sales at ice arena

By BETH WHEELOCK   Tuesday, April 14, 2009 - 4:13 a.m.

From the WCLO newsroom:

Hockey fans might soon be able to buy a beer at the Janesville Ice Arena, but they won't be able to buy hard alcohol there.

The Janesville City Council approved an ordinance Monday allowing fermented malt beverages at the ice arena. Some council members suggested it should be limited to beer sales only. However, the council decided to allow all fermented malt beverages, which includes wine coolers.

Now that the council has approved the ordinance, Wisconsin Hockey Partners, LLC needs to apply for an alcohol license. That license isn't guaranteed, since the ordinance was approved on a 4-3 vote. Council President Amy Loasching voted to approve the ordinance, but Monday's meeting was her last on the council. Newcomer Frank Perrotto will be casting his swing vote on the issue when it comes back to council.

SuperDave - I have a point. The beer sales issue passed and there's nothing you can or anyone else that's against it can do about it. That being said, all the comments (I know you don't like them called complaints) against it on here, are a waste of space because it solves nothing. Hence your last comment. Also, you just took up three paragraphs writing that. That's a lot of space. I know you won't respond to me, but that's ok.

Please refer to the Gazette recap of the council meeting, specifically the comments of Mr. Terril. He said we are worrying about a probelm that does not yet exist. If we allow this team and league to play here and it is a success then we hit a home run. If problems do arise, a council can rescind the license swiftly. Let's take a positive step.

Yahoo! Hockey without alcohol is like...hunting without alcohol! And don't worry about the "hard stuff" -- those who want it will pack their own along. That the city council can spend so much time supporting such nonsense (oh, junior hockey will certainly draw businesses and employers into the community by the score!) and the city can't even RENT a stadium to the Gladiators for more than a few games during their season just shows how distorted their priorities are. They need to focus on the real issues -- like the (in)famous (and likely forgotten) SIDEWALKS (to nowhere) "PLAN"!

thisisme: Hey, what time is our K-Mart gig? HA HA. Re: your peeing and moaning comment...OF COURSE it's alright! Everyone is entitled to their opinions. What I have a hard time with, is when people post something like the following:
~~~~~~~~
well i'm tired of people whining and complaining about (whatever) all the time..jville neads to move forward with new thinking, and.. and.. these people who are always moaning and being whiney little girls and yada yada are just getting in the way of us positive, forward thinking geniuses....
~~~~~~~~
I'm sure you get the idea! A post that complains about other peoples posts and labels them as "complaining" (gosh that term makes my rear end tired...) 1) Adds NOTHING to the discussion. 2) Does that which they are themselves objecting to (complaining). and 3) wastes time and space doing so.
If you have a point to make about the article, make the point! Don't attack other people!! Just address the ideas in the article and in other people's comments. Stop the name-calling!! It just makes YOU look bad.

Now (of course) someone will say that I am "complaining" - guaranteed. If that happens, which it always does, that will once again illustrate the point. Most any comment can be labelled as a "complaint". Labelling it as such is wasting everyone's time.

Nuff said...for cryin' out loud...geepers! :O)

The way I see it is that the people who are complaining are the ones who will never step foot into the Ice Arena or purchase a ticket to see a game. And the people who are for it are the ones that will and there are not enough of you out there to support this venture more than a couple seasons. Take for example Snappers Park in Beloit, on any given night there are half of the seats empty at game time, and the only time the place is full is 50c beer night it is a shame.

Well, I can honestly say that I was born and raised in WI, I am a very proud redneck and the only time I don't have a beer in my hand is when I am or will be driving or at work. I have never had a dui nor have I ever been in a fight because I have been drinking. Now... I have been in several fights when I haven't been drinking... :)

cjjs5- you bring up a good point about the liquor licenses. Everyone is pissing and moaning (is that ok SuperDave) :) and it says right in the article that they still have to apply for the liquor licenses. So... don't be gittin y'all's panties in a bunch till the story is said and done.

ljs64 - No, I don't need to ask him Tom anything because I understand what he is saying. It's pretty simple. He's being realistic whereas you using that same comment, makes no sense. You are exaggerating the worst case scenarios and are digging as far as you can. At one point you're saying fights are going to break out because of the beer and then you're saying you never said people that drink necessarily have a drinking problem.

Selling beer at a hockey game isn't going to cause fights, cause families to die, cause kids to drink or destroy the morals of the athletes. Where the hell have you people been lately? Get over it.

No money is being given to the LLC. The money is being invested in a city facility. When I rent out an apartment, I expect to have to put some money in it to bring it up to rentable quality.
.
The contracts will be let out according to state law, which means competitive bidding. Unless there is a compelling reason, the council is required to accept the lowest bid.
.
It's really not a lot of money to fix up a multi-million dollar facility.

There are alot of parents out there that drink and there kids turn out just fine. Drinking infront of your kids responsibly can also teach them something, you can show them that there is a responsible way of doing things. My parents drank infront of me and I have turned out just fine, never had a drunk driving ticket. The nature of kids is if adults tell them everything is wrong and bad they are gonna do it just in defiance. So as adults and parents we have to teach them ourselves about responsibilty and the right way to do things. It is my responsibility to teach my kids about drinking and drugs and the consequences. I don't expect anyone else to do my job. I will be attending the games and explaing that getting drunk and acting obnoxious is wrong. They can see behavior like that just about anywhere but if I teach my kids correctly, hopefully, they will turn out fine.

SK - I will go to a hockey game and not have a bottle in my had or even a beer. If someone wants to, that is fine with me. There is nothing wrong with having a beer. I've been to Chuck E Cheese with many kids. They have beer there. I've never had one. Actually never seen anyone having one when I was there. I've been in restaurants with kids and kids around. They serve beer there. I've seen many families not drinking. Been to many sporting events where there's kids. Seen many people not drinking there. I have seen some having a beer and harming nobody. It appears to me that you and many others are using any exaggerated excuse you can because you disagree with the whole concept of the hockey team and or the money to upgrade the arena. It passed, it's happening, we have much bigger issues to deal with than someone having a beer at a game.

What is wrong with selling beer at an athletic event? Nothing! Should there be restrictions such as no sales after 2nd period? Sure. Will this lead to more drinking and driving? NO! People that drink and drive will do it from home, a bar, restaurant, game, company party, etc. I am looking FORWARD to having an alternative to driving to Rockford or Madison to watch hockey at a level beyond the Bluebirds! Thank you Council for looking at the positives in this situation!

MadeinUSA - One other thing. If you're concerned about this city and the economy, do you want bidding on a project like this to go outside of the city which in return will not support any business in this town? Or would you prefer our local businesses get it? You know, the ones that we need to desperately support now more than ever? The ones we are going to rely on to keep things going in this town. You lose them, we have even BIGGER problems.

OF COURSE this will pass, just follow the money. The government ice arena will compete with all the legitimate, private businesses. That's just the way it's done. Good luck to all the businesses that will lose sales.

I get few things from that comment. You, like many others are stereotyping everyone that has a beer now and then as a drunk. The ignorance never seems to amaze me. You think everyone going to the hockey game is going to drink and or get drunk because beer is there. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Beer is served all over the place and that doesn't mean everyone is getting drunk or even drinking for that matter. I'd also appreciate that you spare everyone your comments like "you wonder whey your kids are on drugs, they see you getting drunk." Not everyones kids are on drugs and not every parent is a drunk.
