GM recalls 1.5 million vehicles due to potential engine fires
From the Associated Press:
General Motors Corp. is recalling 1.5 million vehicles because of potential engine fires.
GM said there have been no reports of any fires or injuries.
Some of the recalled vehicles are no longer in production. The recall includes the 1998-1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue, the 1997-2003 Pontiac Grand Prix, 1997-2003 Buick Regal, and the 1998-2003 Chevrolet Lumina, Monte Carlo and Impala.
It involves vehicles with a 3.8-liter V6 engine. The government says drops of oil could fall into the exhaust system and cause a fire in the engine.
GM spokesman Kerry Christopher said it was a precautionary measure for consumers.

MiltonRedmen- Interesting about the other recall, but my car's recall was for the same reason as this one. I noticed that this recall is for naturally aspirated engines whereas mine was for supercharged engines.

3.8L V6 is a good engine; been around since the seventies! Just need to figure a good way to route exhaust around it!

MiltonRedmen your right the 3.8 is a good engine. also the 2.8 v6 /3.1 was pretty good
and the 2.5 4 cylinder i think most refered to this engine as the iron duke.

CitizenOne - Grammar must not have come with that engineering degree. And didn't you just admit to being a pothead and wishing people get into bad wrecks and die from drinking on the hockey team topic? Which by the way, those comments were removed.

I'm only pointing out the spelling errors is because it's a little hypocritical to be spouting off about being educated and all that if you can't spell.

So, CitizenOne, when you went to "UW Mil", did you take an English class that perhaps had spelling in the curriculum? Doesn't look like it. But I won't say I disagree with some of your points...

I heard the Janesville Task Force is trying to get GM to open the Janesville plant so they can fix all of these recalled vehicles. They feel "the door is still open" for GM to agree to this. So it looks like the workers may be called back to work!

Ok Woodsman fair is fair. GM has no money. GM is closing plants. GM is reducing hours at plants that are open. If they do file bankrupcy how long will the government want to wait to collect their/our money? To many signs point to their inability to repay the money back.

I guess "YOU" would have to show ME,where they can't pay it back, only fair! I suppose "IF" they went under, the government would put a judgment on things, until they are satisfied, like things are done in the real world. I know i can't,being only one, save this company, but the chevy line of cars,IMO,are compared to the mouse trap,no matter who tries to improve vehicles ,they "ARE" the best on this planet.JMO

GM is not going to be able to pay off the loan, Most of us know that. Some of us are in denial that Generous Motors went under.

Don't get too hung up on the semantics. I prefer to call it a loan also, mainly to distinguish the loans to GM and Chrysler from the outright gifts to the financial sector. But according to Wikipedia, the loans to the auto companies could be considered a bailout.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bailout
The first sentence: "In economics, a bailout is an act of loaning or giving capital to a failing business in order to save it from bankruptcy, insolvency, or total liquidation and ruin".
Now there's another word: bankruptcy. Like it or not folks, GM is in de facto bankruptcy. I think that the national government, and GM, will go to great lengths to prevent an actual filing, but that appears to be inevitable.

Maybe these people that DON'T know the difference between a "LOAN & BAILOUT"?? They must run their lives like, hey buddy, give me a LOAN,after the fact when asked to return the loan monies, they say,THANX FOR BAILING me out bud!! Trust, you must have Trust my friend!

Unless GM goes completely under in a liquidation bankruptcy, they will remain obligated to repay the temporary loan they were given, which is considered a prepayment on the overall bailout proposal.
.
By the way, the Chrysler loans they were given (and repaid) in the 1980s were called a bailout. I don't know where people get the idea the money does not have to be repaid.

Actually anonomouse, the engine in the vehicles being recalled (the 3.8L Series II) is one of the most reliable motors ever built by anyone and was on Ward's Top 10 engines list for that time period. It is an extremely reliable motor and the last GM 3.8L I had went well over 300,000 miles before it began to have any issues. In fact, the GM 3.8 is one of the most sought after motors of its era.

befferer - this recall by GM was issued April 8, 2009 according to the NHTSA website. There was a previous recall to some 3.8 vehicles for potential engine fire due involving the fuel pressure regulator causing the manifold to crack and injectors to leak potentially causing a fire. That recall was issued in 2004, this is a different item.

Woodsman a loan is something you pay back. GM has no intention of paying back the money the government gave them. Therefore it is a bailout.

"Apparently, some of these engines can drop oil onto the exhaust manifold during hard braking. If that manifold has gotten hot enough and the oil dribbles below the heat shield, it can start a small fire. The flames can then engulf the plastic spark plug wire channel, potentially resulting in a full-on engine compartment fire.
The fix? Dealer service departments will be asked to remove said spark plug wire retention channel from the front of the engine bay, and then retrofit two new retainers."
