MILWAUKEE (AP) — A police spokeswoman says a uniformed officer is in critical condition after a gun battle with an armed suspect.

Police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz says the suspect is also in critical condition in a hospital, where he’s in police custody.

She says the shooting occurred Saturday about 3:10 p.m.

Schwartz says police responded to a report of a man with a gun. While officers were en route they got an update that the armed suspect was walking away with a woman and a baby.

She says he got into a vehicle. When police spotted the vehicle minutes later the driver stopped and fled on foot.

She says witnesses report hearing the officer yell for the suspect to get down. Moments later shots rang out.

The officer is 30 years old, with seven years of police experience.
