WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) — The state Department of Natural Resources is recommending a one-year moratorium on an unpopular rule that requires deer hunters to shoot an antlerless deer before they kill a buck.

DNR Secretary Matt Frank said Thursday the earn-a-buck moratorium would be in effect in all of Wisconsin next season except the chronic wasting disease zone in the southern part of the state.

Frank says the move responds to hunters' concerns and frustrations and recommendations from the Wisconsin Conservation Congress.

Hunters killed 19 percent fewer deer during last fall's nine-day hunt, raising criticism that the DNR's population estimates were too high.

Last season, there were 31 earn-a-buck zones that covered about one-third of the state.

Truth-Go to the website and read the article. There has also been other articles written on this including WI Outdooor News. According to Doyle, the DNR secretary should continue to be appointed by the Government with full control. This is opposite of what the people want and opposite of what he originally said.

Wait a minute spark, are you saying that the "Wisconsin Big Game Board" is really in charge, and the conservation congress is just a ruse to make us think our opinion matters?

Until the secretary of the DNR is controlled by the citizens and not the Government, we will have these same issues. Until we get rid of Doyle who doesn't support this possible new bill, we will have problems. See the link below.

With recently reading the Coyotes on the rise in Madison, being more aggressive, and now this article, I just have to comment on the reasons for this. First of all, with all of the OVER killing of the deer (yes, there is CWD, but survival of fittest should take care of it's own), the coyotes are running out of food, and as a result, of course they are going to search for food out of desperate measures, and now there are going to be more killing of coyotes (which yes, I agree under normal circumstances they are a nuicence, but here for a reason), then there is going to be an over population of rabbits, and then we are going to have kill more of them, then our environment is going to be taken over by vegetation that will require man made weed control! Then our fruit of the earth are going to be effected which will effect the health of us! When will this end? It isn't only the economy that is having the trickle effect, where eventually everyone is going to be effected, our "civilized nature control team" is crossing the line with nature as well. It is looking like we are becoming more doomed by the year. Nature really can take care of itself....

No kidding. Just eliminate it statewide. Much like Truth, I had to pass up bucks (which all I seen over the last 2 yrs was 2 bucks, no does) because of this garbage rule. Want to eradicate the deer in certain zones, let us go after them without silly rules like earn-a-buck. Buck or doe, its still meat in the freezer.

The DNR just wants more money, period. that is why I haven't hunted in the past few years. The DNR should be thanking us by shooting the deer all around the state. Who cares about the studies of how many deer there are in the state. They are wasting money when we all know the deer population is thriving just fine without any studies on deer population. Chronic wasting disease is a different story though. There never is going to be a shortage of deer or extinction - all they are is a big rodent that needs to be killed. The DNR should be handing out free deer hunting licenses to curb the high traffic accidents these varmits cause year after year. The DNR is not getting my money anytime soon for reasons I would could write a book on. Some of their rules avoid all common sense and only an idiot would think some of their rules should be followed.

Wait, if we shoot a doe this year, does that mean we qualify for a buck next year?

That's great, now I can shoot at the 3-4 bucks I have had to let run in the past 3 years!!
Now if we can only get them to leave the Janesville office open.

Key phrase here is "except in the chronic wasting disease zone." There is still areas in this zone that shouldn't be in it and less deer are being seen and harvested in these areas also. If you're going to impose a moratorium, do so throughout the state.
