UPDATED: Gas leak evacuation ends in Janesville
JANESVILLE -- Evacuees are being allowed back in their homes after a gas leak was repaired at the intersection of Academy and McKinley streets in Janesville on Thursday afternoon, Janesville police report.
A city bus took evacuees from a one-block radius of the leak to the city bus station on River Street. It was earlier reported that St. Patrick's was the evacuation location, but that was later changed, said Sgt. Rick Larson of the police department.
Alliant Energy workers were called to repair what was thought to be a 2-inch diameter natural gas pipe. It was not immediately know what caused the break, but a crew with a backhoe had been working in the area.

I hope the city Bus station is not the main evacuation site all of the time. Plenty of empty buildings to fix up for just such a case.

I was an evacuee. Yeah, the work being done on the water mains under Academy before the reconstruction seems to have run into a snag. We heard sirens, and looked up to see the city and Alliant guys had all moved away from the hole!
.
The city was nice enough to arrange for a JTS bus to hold some us in comfort (a woman with a baby wasn't even fully dressed), but we were barely on it for half an hour before the all clear.
.
Right now the gas is off and they're doing more digging to isolate the break.
