MILWAUKEE -- Some Wisconsin school districts have stopped keeping track of high school students' rank within their class.

Whitefish Bay and Shorewood high schools have stopped reporting the data, and the Elmbrook School District is looking at following suit.

Nationwide, studies of college admissions departments have shown that colleges are starting to look less at class rank.

Class rank measures how well a student is doing compared to his or her peers. Some argue it's not a very good measure because high schools could have a strong class with many excellent students.

But Tom Reason, associate director of admissions at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, says admissions departments look at many aspects of a student's record besides class rank.

Another reason could be that there are students who rank lower, and therefore we do not want to make them feel bad about themselves.
