BEAVER DAM -- Twenty-one dogs have been killed in a fire at a Beaver Dam kennel.

The Beaver Dam Fire Department says about 31 dogs were at Everafter Kennels when the fire was reported at 6:40 p.m. Friday.

A Web site for the kennel says it is a family-owned operation that breeds Doberman Pinscher and Chinese Crested dogs.

Officials say the fire heavily damaged two sides of the structure, and one end of the roof caved in.

The Dodge County Humane Society was contacted to help in recovering the dogs. There was no word on the condition of the dogs who survived.

Hello I am Margarita, I was recently given this post to read. I am very saddened by some of the comments made about me. Comments made about me as a person and a breeder. I AM NOT A PUPPY MILL. I absolutely love dogs and will do anything for them. Six years ago when my husband died my dogs kept me going. I owe my life to them and decided to do what ever I could to spend more time with them. I quit my well paying job of 25 years and took my life savings to purchace this boarding kennel. I did this to spend more time with my dogs and dedicate my life to other dogs.

I loved this kennel and loved the dogs that I baby sat. Telling the owners that I had failed at my job was the worse thing I have ever had to live though. Including losing my husband that was my best friend in the whole world.

I do breed dogs. I show my dogs. I can not show dogs from the humane society nor can my clients. I do sympathize with the poor pets that are in these facilities. That is why I do offer to take any dog back that the owner can no longer keep. If more breeders did this along with the spay neuter of any non breeding animal this would help this situation 10 fold.

Not everyone wants a dog that they know nothing about. Some want an animal that they know what the personality will be when it grows up. Some want a dog that they know what it will look like when it grows up. Some want an animal that they have an idea about the health and back ground. I want a wonderful doberman that will save my life when I am in need.

This fire was an accident. I am trying very hard to pull together the money I need to rebuild. Not just re-build but do it right so this will not happen again.

I lost some of my best friends in this fire. Babies that were born in my hands. Babies that were in this world because of me. I am a breeder and a very good one so don't judge me because I am doing what I feel I was born to do. This is my life my love and my stse of being. Thank you

As a customer of Margorite I am deeply saddened by what has happend. She worked so long and so hard to get to where she was. When ever she bred her dogs there was a waiting list you had to get on to get a dog from her. You just didn't call her up to get a dog. If you were not referred to her by someone she knew as a good dog owner you were not getting a dog. If for any reason you could not keep your dog from her it was in the contract you sign with her that the dog would go back to her. Let's drop all the mudslinging about puppy mills and what not. Let's greive for the pain and suffering the poor dog's went through. Let's greive for all those owners including Margorite who lost their beloved pets and companions. Bless them all.

Have the Investigators discovered the cause of this horrific kennel fire? I can't find anything in regards to this one way or the other.

I bought my Rottweiler Sadie from Petland and she is a GREAT dog. I bought her as a puppy because I have four children. I was able to socialize her with my family. It is great to rescue animals from the Humane society, however with four children, I do not know the upbringing that dog might have had and I can not risk my children's safety.

Luluberry-i didn't say overpopulate the world with dogs. I said Humans are NOT the only species on earth. We coexist with other species.

JohnDoe,

I fully understand what you are saying... But on the flip side of that, If people keep on purchasing puppies from these stores, the stores will stay in business, and the puppy mills will continue doing what they do.

There will be a boycott at the Janesville Petland on October 5th at 1 pm. Please come and help the aminals

This is definately a sad situation.
And it was also an opening for some to speak out against puppy mills and pet stores.
.
But in all sincerity, what happens to the puppies at a pet store if everyone boycotts and doesn't buy them?
Are they returned to the questionable breeders and then sold for bait to illegal dog fighting operations?
Are they euthanized?
What?
Are they any less important than the shelter animals that need good homes.
.
Are people saying that pet store animals should essentially be ignored and therefore "sacrificed" for the cause.
.
It's easy to say "boycott pet stores" but isn't there a moral or ethical obligation to do what we can for the unfortunate animals that are already in the cages at pet stores? Even if the only "rescue" option is buying them to spare them the a worse fate?
.
I'm not passing any judgement on anyone.
I just think this is a legitimate concern that deserves an answer.

"It was probably a puppy mill looking for insurance money"

How a person could comment with the above is totally unbelievable when having no clue as to what he/she is talking about. You are truly a totally illiterate and ignorant person.

As far as some other illiterates making statements that this "was a puppy mill", I believe I read the dogs were "BOARDED" that were killed. People who went on vacations or whatever had to leave their dogs someplace while they were away. Any "breeding practices" or whatever of the Owner, has no bearing on this horrific tragedy of her "Boarding" Kennel and the grief left behind now of the owners who will never see their beloved family member ever again. It also was reported that the Owner risked her own life to save the 3 dogs she did manage to get out.

Until, and if, the Fire Investigators find out the reason for this extremely fast moving fire, no one has the answer.

THINK BEFORE you send your totally ludicrous, hurtful and offensive to others, statements.

It's typical of the comments posted on the site. Nobody posts comments unless the story is tragic. The people use it for a chance to voice their opinions, political view, etc. Nobody can just except the story, except what happened without going into their version of what happened and why it happened. GET A LIFE!!! And by the way, if you don't like Janesville...LEAVE! You sound like a complete moron by saying you hate it here and yet you're still here and better yet, you're on this site posting comments!!

Twenty-two animals perished in a fire at the Everafter Kennel in the Town of Beaver Dam Friday night. Twenty-one dogs and one cat died. Owner Margarita Files says there were 25 animals in the structure when the blaze began. She was shaken by the incident and overwhelmed at how she would tell owners of the dogs that their animals had died. She lost nine of her own dogs in the fire, but was more concerned about getting her clients' dogs out. The building was a total loss. Beaver Dam and six neighboring fire departments fought the fire. nurse4u...

I'm taking what you said as " people have a right to over populate the earth with animals." Have you been to the humane society lately??? While these people are being greedy and breeding animals, there are countless poor angels sitting in cages and kennels at the humane society and other shelters, not being adopted because of people like all these others who would rather buy a dog with "papers" then to save a sweet animal from it's early demise. Breeders make me sick, and they are just as bad as puppy mills in my book... Complain all you want, I know I am right, and these people are wrong.

If you truly care about animals, you would adopt a shelter animal, not buy one from a breeder!

What completely invalidated Lulu's statement was that this kennel was a boarding operation, thus the 21 dogs killed were dogs owned by individuals and families who were keeping them there while away. The kennel's website even indirectly states this: http://www.moadobes.com/

You go, lulu. I don't even believe in breeders. I don't care HOW much they "love" dogs. If they want to raise dogs for their own pleasure, that's wonderful but breeding them to sell or even GIVE to others is irresponsible. There are too many unloved animals in this world as there is to deliberately create more even if it uses the excuse of "love for the breed". You prove to me that, for example, there are LITERALLY only two Dobermans left in the WORLD (one male, one female) and THEN I'd believe in breeding the two to keep a nice line of dogs in existence. But when there are already a million of them out there, that's just $$$$$ talking.

Tell you what, from what I have been researching the past few months, it did sound like a mill to me, I am sorry to offend you, and I have a right to my opinion... so if you have a prolem with it, continue with the head biting, I give up on trying to be nice to you people. I remembered that I live in Janesville, the city where all is not forgiven and people run others down for taking parking places. I need to move to a more civilized community.

The difference between puppy mills and breeders is great. There are very well respected breeders who do it for the love of the breed and not the love of the $$. Hopefully this kennel will receive the support it needs to rebuild. My heart goes out to this kennel and its four legged friends.

luluberry_0981,
Maybe instead of "working on the little bit of information you had" you could take the time to get more information instead of jumping to conclusions. I'm sure that if it were a puppy mill that the reporters would be all over the story.
*
As for getting your head back it's obvious that you don't use it. First you say it was set for insurance money, now it's to cover up a "puppy mill".
*
I'd hate to be this woman. She has to tell the dog owners that their dog, a member of the family , has died while in her care. I can only imagine what she's going through.

Sadly, that's not exactly true. My mother is a breeder, and everyone person I've met over the nation who I have told this automatically assume she runs a puppy mill. For many breeders, like her, that is just a problem you have to deal with by educating those who say such things. It's ignorance. People don't know any better.

hey i feel bad for the dogs, really i do... but more then likely when there is a fire at a "kennel" it is someone trying to cover up a puppy mill. Just working on the little bit of info i had, thanks for biting my head off, can I have it back?

Why do people always have to assume the worst? Even if it was a puppy mill 21 dogs still died. Just because dogs are born in a puppy mill it does not give them the right to die. Grow up and be a little more sensitive!

This was most certainly NOT a puppy mill!! The woman who owns it is respected world wide as a breeder and handler of champion dobermans!!! She is one of the most loving caring people you could ever meet and would do NOTHING to harm any animal!
Perhaps you should at least check out the kennel website that is mentioned before you pass judgment, luluberry.
