Report: Wis. lawmakers flush with campaign cash
MADISON, Wis. (AP) A new study says Wisconsin lawmakers have collected almost $4 million in campaign contributions.
The report by government watchdog group Wisconsin Democracy Campaign found their challengers in the November election had collected about $988,000. Twenty-seven candidates for open seats had generated about $580,000.
The report found incumbents held 270 fundraisers between January 2007 and August 2008.
Democratic Rep. Sheldon Wasserman of Milwaukee had the most money in the bank of any legislative candidate with nearly $347,000.
Wasserman is trying to unseat Republican Sen. Alberta Darling of River Hills. Darling had almost $269,000 on hand.

You took the words right out of my mouth! And you know what's even worse is that we don't do anything to change the laws.

The purchase of legislative seats over the past fifty years has destroyed representation. People used to grumble that Congress was full of laywers. Then the tide turned, and businessmen began buying seats, and passing business-friendly, citizen-cheating legislation. Well, look at our financial markets today. Businessmen, with absolutely no political knowledge or acumen, have lied and stolen from their legislative positions while Joe Citizen loses everything he has. Adlai Stevenson once said, "An honest man aspires to public office. By the time he attains it, he is no longer worthy of it." What a sad state our government has fallen into. It takes honest people to properly run a government, and there seem to be none there...only a bunch of money-hungry opportunists.
